The Mini Cooper already blurs the line between a premium sports car
and a versatile hatchback. But just to make sure that a select few
would always be on the sporty side, there was an official upgrade
by John Cooper Works. This well-preserved, loaded, and low-mileage
2003 Mini Cooper S John Cooper Works represents the beginning of
that new era on Mini motoring.
America was introduced to the John Cooper Works package in 2003,
and so while the JCW Mini is a well-known ultra-hot hatch today,
you're looking at one of the rarer early adaptors. But before we
dive into how this nimble sports machine got even zestier, take a
moment to appreciate the preservation of the full package. The
Electric Blue Metallic paint appears to be the original factory
finish. It retains a nice shine, and the brightness goes will with
the white roof and sport mirrors. The whole car fits together
nicely, which is both a testament to a vehicle that was engineered
under BMW and an example that has only averaged about 1,600 miles
annually.
The black leather interior with blue accenting is both premium and
stylish. So while you have hatchback versatility, this is no
economy car. You slip behind a grippy three-spoke factory wheel on
a tilt column, and ahead of you is a large tach in this
driver-focused machine. In the center is the large speedometer
reminiscent of the original Austin Mini. Below that is your
AM/FM/CD stereo and air conditioning controls. Plus, the power
windows, power locks, and other modern luxuries are on cool toggle
switches. And that large power sunroof is great to add an extra
sunny displacement to this already cheery Mini. You even get the
safety convenience of front airbags, side airbags, and ABS. This is
truly a thoughtful mix of retro touches with modern luxury.
The reason why this one got treated so extra special all has to do
with the motor. The John Cooper Works upgrade was only available to
the already hot S-package cars. It comes in an individually
numbered kit that includes upgraded Eaton supercharger, pulley,
cylinder head, engine management, and free flowing exhaust. It
gives the 1.6-liter motor a 23% boost to an even 200 horsepower.
That's a ton of power for this lightweight rocket ship, and you
have full control of it all with this six-speed manual
transmission. The fully independent suspension, grippy tires, and
four-wheel disc brakes make sure this retro car lives to the
sporting heritage that made original Mini Cooper giant killers on
the racetracks and rally circuit. But when you're just looking for
a daily driver, features like power steering and cruise control
makes this a fine long-distance machine.
Complete with owner's manual, no matter if you're looking for an
affordable future classic or something cool to keep the miles off
of your vintage ride, this irresistible price means you need to
