For Sale: 1991 AM General M998 in Ft Worth, Texas

Vehicle Description

As most of us know, the mighty Humvee was originally created for military use, even deriving its name from a military acronym - High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle. Little by little over the years, through a series of redesigns and refinements, the once battle-ready vehicle got a little soft once introduced to the masses, even to the point of becoming little more than a fierce-looking grocery getter for some. Not so with this 1991 AM General M998 Humvee. Having LITERALLY served in the military, it's no common SUV, but rather an uncompromising vehicle outfitted for extreme conditions.

Fittingly, its camouflage matte green exterior has been left intact - considering this Humvee's history, no other exterior would do. Despite its faithful service in often rugged conditions, its exterior remains in surprisingly good shape, with no serious dings, only minor blemishes, and no evidence of rust brought back from its journeys. Still in completely stock configuration, its canvas top bears no rips or other signs of trauma, looking instead perfectly capable of putting in another stint should this Humvee be called back - one of the true benefits of having logged only 40,361 miles in its lifetime. This venerable vehicle was never about frivolity but rather functionality, and despite its relatively modest height (when you consider what stock 4x4 trucks look like these days) it carries with it both impressive ground clearance as well as wheel clearance within its massive fenders. With a stance unparalleled in its width and that signature push guard up front, it's sure to draw admiring glances wherever it goes - not just for its looks, but for what those looks stand for. Authenticity is a rare commodity, after all. Furthermore, this particular Humvee is arguably the best version, representing what we now call a quad-cab pickup in modern times, which means that you can haul your friends and a load of lumber at the same time, and never the two shall meet. As you'd expect, the bumpers, mirrors, lights, and brush guard are all heavy-duty and built for any terrain, and the rear-mounted matching spare out back means you can hit the trails with reckless abandon.

Inside, you'll see more evidence of that authenticity. It's all about heavy duty use with this olive drab interior, with failsafe, rock-solid controls and surfaces impervious to the elements. Thankfully though, a former owner decided to invest heavily in insulating the cabin from the elements, and that coupled with the ice-cold A/C system means that this Humvee is very comfortable inside. Certainly much better than what our brave men and women had to deal with many years ago. Take your position in the driver's seat, and to the left you'll see the very place designated to safely retain the military- issued M-16 rifle, and all of the proper labeling and badges can be found throughout the cockpit and retain complete legibility as well, including the correct maintenance and instructional tags. The instruments in front remain completely functional, showing only enough patina to serve as evidence to this unique vehicle's history. In front and in the second row, bucket seats equipped with water-resistant surfaces straddle the truss-like steel expanse of the tunnel between them, and the rear 'bed' area looks like it could withstand anything it might come in contact with. All four door are in fact made metal, not canvas - something plenty rare in just garden variety convertible top Humvees, and all the glass inside the cabin is crisp and clear.

Mechanically speaking, this Humvee is equipped for rugged dependable duty, regardless of exterior conditions. The entire drivetrain remains in an appropriate state of readiness for action, including a 6.2 liter diesel engine that fires right up and runs smoothly and a 3-speed automatic transmission that engages without incident. With its all-wheel drive and impressively sturdy 4-wheel independent suspension, there really isn't much that can stop this Humvee from moving forward. Another example of just how much sturdiness is built into this Hummer comes in the form of its dual battery, 24v electrical system, with one of the batteries designated solely for starting and the other responsible for powering all other functions. Four-wheel power disc brakes provide the stopping power needed for this substantial vehicle, power steering helps maneuverability tremendously, and the body sits on a set of 37" blacked-out wheels that are wrapped with massive 37x12.5x16.5 Goodyear Wrangler tires still showing plenty of tread life.

There are plenty of vehicles that can provide visual impact, but there are precious few whose very presence carries the meaning packed into this 1991 AM General M998 Humvee. Call today!

Please note this vehicle was manufactured for the military and issued a non-standard VIN.
