Vehicle Description
1984 Dodge D100 Pickup
Drag racing seems like it's been with us forever. In truth it's a
postwar phenomenon, with roots stretching back to dry lakebed
racing in Southern California in the 1930s. From those humble
beginnings to modern times, when a modern Top Fueler can go 0-1000
feet in a tick over three seconds at speeds topping 330mph, we
present a brief history of drag racing, hitting important
milestones along the never-ending quest for the perfect pass. The
reasoning behind the quarter-mile distance is as murky as the
origin of the term "drag-racing". Popular mythology ties it to
quarter-horse racing, or the distance of a city block, but in an
interview with hot-rodding historian Gray Baskerville, appearing in
Rod & Custom magazine in 2001, drag racer/eyewitness Leslie Long
swore that it was simply the length of runway available, plus a
short run-off, at the Santa Ana facility. Whatever the case, the
quarter-mile soon became the default race-distance measurement. Thx

For consignment, one serious runner of a truck, this former V6
hauler turned potent 1/4 mile killer is now waiting for you in our
South Mallway. Steamroller sized rear tires, a full on roll cage, a
supercharged small block stroker V8, and worked automatic
transmission. Put into storage a number of years ago due to the
untimely passing of our consignor's husband, diligent research has
brought to light that this truck used to run the New Jersey race
circuit including Atco Raceway and Englishtown Raceway Park. As an
added bonus, a trailer is included with your purchase so hauling
this racy rig home won't be any trouble at all. Read on and get
your wrenches ready!
Due to varying emissions control devices being removed, please

department to verify the ability to legally register this vehicle
in your area***
Exterior
Bathed in an allure shade of charcoal gray, the painted steel
panels are very straight and have well minded gaps and seams. The
overall design of the truck has been retained and looks very good
doing so. No rust is seen within miles of this truck, and all
trimmings, although minimalistic, are very shiny and straight with
nary even the beginnings of any dimpling or fading. The front
grille with a single headlight on either side uses square and
rectangle design, the standard of the 80's and early 90's.
Simplified, yet sophisticated, the grille is well preserved, as is
the bumper below. Hovering above is a fiberglass cowl induction
hood that leads back to the Lexan windshield. The cab has been
fully fitted with Lexan in the name of weight savings and from the
rear "glass" the multiple downbars of the roll cageextend down into
the bed. The doors are straight and close with a quality thud, and
sport wing windows on either side,(why don't manufacturersstill
make these today?). The long 8-foot bed is wonderfully straight on
the sides, hasa black tonneau covering thegray steel inner bed with
huge wheel tubs, the battery and a small fuel cell. a wheel well
surrounded by bling. The rear exterior of the gate is looking like
new and shows with a snappy and functionalaluminum spoiler atop.
Moving down the tailgate we shake hands with the parachute and
further down is a molded roll pan with the kill switch mounted
within easy reach. Skinny and fat drag rubber, 26x4.5-15 up front
and 32x14-15 in the rear are wrapping Weld Prostar wheels for the
perfect drag racing look
Trailer
Ready to perform your hauling duties is a Wells Cargo AW2824W
enclosed trailer finished in truck matching charcoal gray for the
sides, front and rear. A slightly rusted roof covers the top of
things. Moving inside through the rear ramp door we are met with a
mix of checkered flag decaling and polished aluminum diamond plate
for the flooring. A twin bank of cabinets hangs from the ceiling on
the left side and up front is a larger tool cabinet and an electric
powered winch is mounted to the floor below. A small "office
quarters" is just ahead and has been fitted with a household air
conditioner and a multi-tiered table. A man door allows egress
without having to climb around your racer. 5,000lb axles allow you
to haul nearly anything you desire and electric brakes bring things
to a safe stop. 15-inch aluminum wheels are bolted to the axles and
present with ST225/75R15 radials that are in need of replacing.
Interior
Totally stripped of any conveniences including carpet and door
panels we now see painted a mix of charcoal and black steel all
around, and it has been caged. Within this cocoon of steel are a
pair of Jaz racing seats with G-Force 5-point racing harnesses. The
factory dash with itswoodgrain surrounds has been fitted with a
custom cluster of Autometer Phantom white faced gauges and plenty
of toggle switches for various functions. A B&M shifter sits
right next to the driver. Beadrolled aluminumcovers the inner
structure of the doors and we note a window net hanging on the
driver side. Many good clues this truck is capable of sub 10 second
passes.
Drivetrain
A 360ci V8 which after some research, we believe but cannot confirm
has been bored and stroked out to 408ci, now sports Magnum style
cast iron cylinder heads. These heads have roller rockers to
actuate the valves and have the benefit of screw in studs. Headers
are attached here on the heads and feed down to Borla stainless
mufflers. There is an aluminum intake and Xtreme Velocities carb
hat sitting atop. Unfortunately the carburetor is missing but we
can ascertain that the spec should be between 950-1150cfm for a
blow through style 4-barrel. This engine is supported by a
Mangaflow fuel system and a Procharger F1R supercharger is on the
front of the mill to give this 1/4 miler some extra ponies and we
note an electric cooling fan as well as an electric water pump. An
A904 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic is on behind this boisterous
mill and has been fitted with a reverse manual valve body. For the
rear we see a Fab 9 style housing with heavy duty axles and a
spool. Miles of braided stainless hoses and polished aluminum grace
the lightened engine bay along with extra bracing that ties into
the roll cage.
Undercarriage
All buttoned up underneath with a solid frame and floors.
Independent front suspension with coil springs is upfront, and on
back is a ladder bar arrangement with coil overs. Disc brakes are
noted all around and we see an added cross member in the rear of
the frame that ties to the parachute mount.
Drive-Ability
As with any vehicle out of long term storage we did not immediately
fire this racer up. A few turns of the engine by hand revealed some
valvetrain noise which with the valve covers pulled shows a rocker
and lock that have backed off from their stud. While we cannot
speak to any further damage within the mill we can tell you that
there is evidence of this rocker moving around the valvetrain in
the past. A teardown is in order here.
With a few faults found on this truck you'll have to look far and
wide to find another one in as good of condition. Real straight
body panels, a clean bed, raced out to the max and wide wide rear
tires. Yes, it needs some mechanicalTLC on the existing engine, or
step things up a notch with a crate engine and after some shakedown
time it'll be your turn key racer. A popular year for the design
all living up to the built RAM toughadvertising!
