This GTO was purchased by the current owner in the late 1980's and
he immediately set about doing a frame-on restoration. The car was
originally blue charcoal with a black interior and black top. The
owner decided to go with a more appealing color combo of montero
red with parchment interior and white top. The body is laser
straight and painted with 17 coats of lacquer paint. The entire
interior and convertible top was replaced as well as the power top
mechanism. The radio was replaced with a correct looking unit that
has modern internals with an auxiliary input.
The engine was rebuilt and a professionally rebuilt tri-power unit
was added. The 4 speed transmission was kept for the time being.
Restoration was finished in 1990. Approx 10 years ago the owner
decided to make some changes to make the car a better driver. The 4
speed was replaced with a brand new Tremec 5 speed. Tubular upper
control arms and front disc brakes were added as well as anti-sway
bars to improve handling. The car can now cruise comfortably on the
freeway at under 1,500 rpm.
Beautiful car that runs and drives excellent. Only 14k miles since
the restoration was finished.
