This 1987 Porsche 944 has been highly modified to enhance performance and appearance without straying too far from the original idea; to create a reliable world class sports car worthy of the Porsche name with a lower entry price than the 911 or 928. Mission accomplished.
This is one racy 944.
To start it has a 3.0 DOHC normally aspirated 4-cylinder from a 1990 944 S2 that loves to rev and moves this light weight mid year 944 with noticeably more speed than its original 2.5 and is on par with the Turbo S. In fact this car is much more fun and is easier to drive fast than the Turbos and their ever present turbo lag. The secret to the spirited nature of this car is that it retains its original short geared transaxle and limited slip differential. The gearbox was overhauled at the time of the motor swap and a Turbo transmission cooler was adapted to the case. A new clutch and reinforced torque tube finished the job.
The drive train enhancements are just the beginning as this car is equipped with some serious upgrades to the suspension and brakes that are highlighted by the installation of factory 944 Cup Koni adjustable coilovers front and rear, deleted rear torsion bars, M030 (Turbo S) sway bars and a shock tower brace, all lowered and corner balanced for serious track work when called upon. Brakes are off a Turbo S and the quick ratio manual steering rack makes for a very satisfying and dialed in driving experience. Wheels are forged aluminum borrowed from the 928 GT, staggered 8" and 9" by 16" clad with sticky Bridgestones; that's a lot of rubber under this car.
Of course as the pictures show, its not all about performance. It starts with a very rare slick top (sunroof delete) body with the North American bumpers swapped out for the European versions. A 924 Turbo front grille adds some additional distinction while functioning to direct cold airflow into the modified air filter housing. 944 Cup mirrors are fitted to let those who know, know what this car is all about. Other than the bumpers, the car has never been painted. As such, being a black car it does show some imperfections collected over the years.
The interior is in remarkably fresh condition with nary a flaw in the dash, headliner, carpet kit, door cards or seats. The rear hatch doesn't rattle and the glass has not delaminated. All lighting and instrumentation are in working order, AC blows cold. The older Alpine stereo system however, is in need of attention. Glass is good and window lifts work smoothly. The odometer crashed at 101k, not uncommon for old Porsches.
Having had lots of experience with the full range of the series 951 Porsches, this car is a stand out example. Its lower and stiffer, quicker and more responsive and it shifts, steers and stops better than any of them including a Turbo and an S2. And with the Euro touches, it is arguably better looking too.
This car is neither original nor pristine, but you would be hard pressed to find a better driver condition example.
This car has had a storied ownership history, which along with documentation pertaining to the modifications, back that up and is included with the sale. Porsche 944's have long been overlooked by the car collecting community. Those days are over. Pristine example 944 Turbo's are now selling for $50,000 and up. Buy this car, take care of it and enjoy it and you will never lose money.
