For Sale: 1928 Buick Century in Kentwood, Michigan
GR Auto Gallery is pleased to offer this 1928 Buick Country Club
Coupe for your consideration. Famously known as the last car to
leave Mackinac Island, this Buick has an interesting history to
accompany it. Purchased by E.M. Tellefeson and brought to the
island, Tellefeson had previously had two other vehicles on the
island despite the 1896 resolution banning the "horseless
carriage." Tellefeson had a somewhat long commute and continued to
operate the Buick until 1935 when everyone on the island was up in
arms over the matter and the court issued a final order to "Quit
Using That Car!" Not long after that, the Buick was placed on
blocks in the barn behind Tellefeson's house, where it sat for 40
years, until leaving the island by barge for St. Ignace in
1975.
This 1928 Buick Country Club Coupe has since been lovingly restored
after its exile from Mackinac Island. The coachwork is in excellent
shape with a lustrous black paint job and a red pinstripe. The
landau top is beautiful shape with the landau irons intact. With
dual mounted fender spares and a cargo trunk, this Buick is very
complete. The engine received a complete overhaul during the
restoration. It fires right up and runs smooth. The 21in knock-off
wheels are wrapped in white walls which accentuate the long sleek
lines of this beautiful Buick.
Climbing into the cabin of this Buick is not just a trip back in
time, it's a trip back in time to Mackinac Island in the last car
to cruise her roads. There is some memorabilia that accompanies the
car, including the original title issued to E.M. Tellefeson. Don't
miss the chance to own this exquisite documented piece of
history!
