Vehicle Description
2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca
The Boss 302 Laguna Seca edition was an even more race inspired
package than the normal production Boss. It featured a rear seat
delete that included a cross brace, Recaro sport seats, Torsen
limited slip differential, revised suspension tuning, a bigger rear
stabilizer bar, a specific Laguna Seca edition badging and wheels,
and a huge splitter! This and Ford's TracKey, a special key
available to buyers of the 2012/13 Mustang Boss 302 that, when
used, switches the dual-path powertrain control module (PCM) from
streetable pony car to 444 HP track-ready stallion. Yes, the future
is now. Each 12/13 Boss 302 will come with an all-black key that
will start your car just like any ol' Mustang. However, if buyers
wanted to get the Boss at its full potential, the RED TracKey is
the answer! TracKey will give you a second set of PCM software
parameters which alters more than 200 engine management systems,
turning the Boss 302 into a Track Beast, increasing low-end torque
and the car also received a two-stage launch control similar to
that used on the Cobra Jet cars. The crazy thing is that if you
want to go back to stock, all you have to do is start the car with
the black key and the Boss goes back to the tame (if that even can
be used) factory engine settings.
This Boss Laguna Seca Edition is definitely Boss when it comes to
performance looks and styling. Up to 444 horses, and track
performance, menacing black, beautiful graphics and a Recaro seat
interior, and this car bleeds corkscrew and downhill to boot, just
like its namesake track near the wonderful wine country of
California. Exterior
As the song goes: "Quite right, you're bloody well right" and this
car meets and exceeds those expectations. Draped in black paint the
straight steel panels are minding their gaps very well. The car
throws back to the humble beginnings with the hockey stick cove in
the door and rear quarter and a mirroring hockey stick silver
graphic, starting on the front quarter, and dropping downward
toward the rocker and then heading rearward. Also, it makes use of
a wide racing stripe also in stick on silver, which runs from
grille too windscreen on the hood. Up front a blacked-out grille
with vertical red, white, and blue with prancing steed overlay in
chrome is flanked by iconic shaped retro headlights sealed under
clear plastic, and below is a large splitter style spoiler. On the
rear is a small spoiler in silver, and the use of triple
taillights, again a tip of the Mustang hat to the past. On all 4
corners we see 19-inch wheels wrapped in polished aluminum with
painted black inserts, and low profile 255/40ZR19's upfront, and
285/35ZR19's on back.
Interior
Dark Charcoal suede high back bucket seats courtesy Recaro are
flanking a nifty center console racing forward, housing a few
storage areas and the small black knobbed shifter. On the dash we
note more retro with dual deep circular gauges, with digital LED
displays, again mimicking the first versions of this pony car. A
suede wrapped steering wheel with the fixin's for radio, cell
phone, and cruise control embedded within it to touch while eyes on
the racetrack. Black carpet floods the floors and is absolutely
pristine, as is headliner. The rear seats have been removed for
weight, and now just a curved carpeted area with trunk through "pet
door" access for those longer items. By the way the trunk is all
clean and excellently covered with the correct felting in gray and
black wool.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is nestled a clean 302ci V8 with Airaid Parnelli
Jones cold air intake and EFI, an MT-82 6 speed manual transmission
is strapped to the rear, and way back we note a Torsen Limited Slip
8.8 inch 3.73 geared axle. In factory trim this set up produces a
tire blistering 444hp, this car however goes above and beyond. The
red track key no longer is functional in this configuration as it
has a custom tune courtesy of the gentlemen at Bama Performance &
American Muscle which gives a perfect blend of performance and
drivability and comes with lifetime tunes and reflashing at no
cost. We'll touch more on this in a bit...
Undercarriage
All clean and green (actually black) underneath with power disc
brakes all around in particular Brembo 4 piston front brakes.
Independent coil springs for the front suspension and 3 link with a
panhard bar for the rear. Dual exhaust with 2 out back and 2 out
the sides are seen.
Drive-Ability
We dared not go too far, but the test track harkened, and we
answered its call. My cohort and I strapped in to the perfectly
supportive Recaros, engaged our seatbelts and brought the Boss to
life. Key choice is no longer a deciding factor in this car, with
the Bama Perfomance tune installed, the red track key is now just a
key. Performance fully exceeded expectation in acceleration,
handling and braking. While we don't have a stock Boss in our every
expanding inventory to compare this hopped up model to we can say
that after a brief conversation with the consignor we have been
enlightened to the fact that with the current tune this car's
performance is a blend of black key and red key performance. A
perfect homologation!
With a mere 6,285 miles on her clock, it is still virtually new.
Total Boss 302 that shows the competition who's really BOSS. Great
retro graphics and the Recaro Interior is so sweet, it will leave a
great taste in your mouth, and a small bruise on your butt! For the
purists out there, the car can be returned to its original 2 Key
configuration with a quick phone call to Ford Performance. Now that
my friends is Boss!
