After the 1992 racing season, Elliot parted with Melling Racing to join Junior Johnson and Associates. Winless in 1993 with the new Sponsor and eighth overall in that year's championshop standings, Elliot scored one win the following season in the Southern 500 at Darlington. After that victory, Elliot announced he would be starting his own team, Elliot-Hardy Racin, with High- Profile corporate sponsorship from Fast-food giant McDonald's for 1995. Elliot used the racing number 94 in honor of his nephew. This Bill Elliot's #94 was the Elliot-Hardy Teams display car for 1997.
