Having owned more than two dozen air cooled Porsches we have learned to not fear the high mileage examples. Porsches are made of robust materials and are built to last.
The flat six engines have evolved over decades and were proven over and over again at Daytona, Sebring and LeMans endurance races. The simplicity of their design and the fact that there is no water in the engines contributes to their longevity. Keep fresh oil in them and they can last a very long time if not forever. Beginning in 1978 all Porsche 911's were made with galvanized steel, helping to keep the rust worms at bay. High quality materials and no frills creature comforts reduce the opportunity for electrical, mechanical and hydraulic problems to pop up.
The car offered here for sale has clocked over 300,000 miles, and despite that lofty milestone is in great mechanical condition. This car starts right up with no smoke or strange noises. It runs strong, accelerates and shifts smoothly through all five gears. Steering and brakes are what you would expect of a Porsche. In fact, a recent compression test revealed less than 4% leakdown across all six cylinders, something you would expect of a well maintained engine. Most of these air cooled 911's weep a little oil here or there, making the dry state of this car remarkable.
The body, other than some dings and scrapes is straight, rust free and appears (as confirmed by an accident free Carfax) to be sporting all of its original sheet metal. The glass is good and the interior is very nice. The leather seats have some patina but are free of rips or cracks. The carpet is in good shape and the dash is flawless. The glove box needs a bit of attention and the steering wheel has some loose threads. Doors and door pockets are in great shape. Windows roll up and down smooth. Doors fit perfect and the front and rear decklids and latches all operate correctly. Mechanical seat adjustments move freely in all directions. A fully restored Targa top is included with this car.
Aside from tending to cosmetics, there are a few small areas that will need a new owner's attention including the passenger side outside door handle (inside works). The tachometer is not operating. The AC has not been tested or charged. The aftermarket stereo and power antenna are inoperative. And, as of this writing new tires will need to be mounted before this Carrera takes on high speed or daily driver duty.
All this said, this is a great driving, complete air cooled 911 Carrera with the bulletproof 3.2 motor and 915 gearbox. And the fact that this unit has 300k+ miles makes it all the more impressive. Oh, the stories it could tell... We offer it as a very reasonably priced entry to the Porsche experience. This is an ideal car for the enthusiast who is handy and has some tools. Who wants a project that can be driven today and steadily improved through the course of one's ownership.
