For Sale: 1950 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 in Atlanta, Georgia

Vehicle Description

Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1950 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 Holiday Coupe, a two-owner car with known history to new. The car's first owner, Buster Tiffany, bought it to drive on his honeymoon in 1950; nearly 40 years later it had achieved classic status, and he showed it regularly throughout Wisconsin during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The current Atlanta owner purchased it from the first owner's estate in 2011. Widely considered America's first muscle car, the 88 paired a 303 cubic inch V8 with a relatively light body (for the time) - handily winning a string of NASCAR races from 1949 to 1952; a 1950 Rocket 88 won the inaugural Carrera Panamericana. And of course the Holiday Coupe, the two-door hardtop variant of the 88, is the most attractive and desirable fixed-roof version of the car.

This Olds was repainted to a driver standard in the original color some years ago (we think in the 1980s); bumpers, trim, chrome, etc. are original and showing some patina but are complete and without major damage. Original underside with some rust in the inner rockers (this was a Wisconsin car, after all). Interior is mostly original; front seats and door cars were reupholstered a few years ago in correct materials (but the back seat retains its factory upholstery). All gauges are working except for the temp gauge, so a modern gauges was installed in place of the clock above the radio. The original AM radio powers up and works fine; horn, wipers, turn signals and lights are all working as they should.

The original engine was rebuilt at 189,000 miles - the car currently has just over 194k on the odometer. Great care was taken during the overhaul to preserve as much originality as possible. The valve covers, for example, are still finished in their original paint and have a fantastic patina. Correct Rochester AA carburetor with oil-bath air cleaner. Starts, runs and drives well.

Overall this Rocket 88 Futuramic presents as a remarkably original and unmolested example. For more information about this 1950 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 Holiday Coupe for sale at Motorcar Studio in Atlanta, please call 404-692-5250.
