Vehicle Description
1971 Pontiac Grand Prix
Pontiac ad men of the day loved to stretch the images unnaturally
wider, longer and lower than they were in real life. That's what is
called "artistic license" and if anyone took advantage of this
trick, it was the automotive ad men who put the images down for
newspaper and magazine pages.
Pontiac's upscale, sporty car that offers full-size comfort along
with sporty looks, spirited performance and all the whistles and
bells, and the purveyor of the "wide track". We have on
consignment, a 1971 version of this large piece of Detroit iron
which is presenting in very good condition. A great early 1970's
pre 5 mph crash bumper, and a return to the single headlight have
this in my opinion as one of the best-looking models of the Grand
Prix offering.
Exterior
The relatively small, yet upright, grill is topped with long,
flowing lines all the way to the back edge of the hood, which
neatly conceals the windshield wipers. On the bottom this grill
continues through the bumper "beak" and is flanked by a single
headlight on either side. Chrome is very nice and mirror-like on
all surfaces where it is present. A deep coating of Bronzini Gold
lusciously covers this steel slab sided car which appears to have
been dipped in chocolate (without the drips!). Body matching
mirrors are on both sides, and a Cordova vinyl top is covering the
roof very neatly. A nicely sloping rear window leads to the trunk
deck which follows suit and takes cues from the front with another
V pointed rear panel, with underlying bumper. The taillights are
neatly imbedded onto the rear bumper and the styling is reminiscent
of the Buick Rivieras of yore. A shiny rocker trim runs from well
to well, and the wells take from it and are surrounded by thin
chromed trim. Rally 2 wheels are all around and are wrapped in like
new thin white radials.
Interior
Looking into a very clean and well-preserved interior wrapped in
Sandalwood and Gold with plenty of power options. The driver's door
panel is near showroom and contains the window toggles and a LH
outside mirror joystick adjuster. Seating also in Sandalwood has a
mixture of buttoned broadcloth inserts and vinyl bolsters complete
with pristine piping. The front is a power split back bench and the
rear is a matching pattern rear bench. Noted on the driver's side
rear is some water staining on the seatback within the broadcloth.
The dash is all original and very clean with a rally gauge package
added in at the factory. Sitting below the dash is a blast from the
past in the form of an 8-track player. It is mounted to the hump
with a space age pedestal. Clean gold carpet floods the floors and
a tight puffy headliner hangs above.
Drivetrain
A numbers matching 400ci V8 sits within a nicely aged engine bay.
This is topped with a Rochester Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor, and
back by a TH400 3-speed automatic. A 10-bolt rear axle with 3.08
gears is on the way back.
Undercarriage
Some light surface rust is noted throughout but certainly nothing
to be concerned about. New shocks and a new exhaust have been
recently added as well as new coil springs. Power disc brakes are
on the front of the car and power drums for the rear.
Drive-Ability
This car starts right up effortlessly and is ready to roll to our
test track. It handled beautifully with those new shocks and
springs and had nice smooth acceleration and automatic shifting.
Overall provided a comfortable ride.
I've personally been to this consigners garage and it is a great
climate controlled, batteries on charger, stacked setup for his
collection. This car shows very well just like others in his
collection which seems to have a slant to early 70's iron, all in
great condition, and this one is no exception. Beautiful pointed
styling, and glorious paint, this one will not last long here at
Classic Auto Mall.
