Built along three distinct series between late 1972 and 1975, BMW's 3.0 CSL (the "L" suffix signified "leicht" or "lightweight") was truly a homologated racing car for the road. Lightness was achieved by the use of thinner steel bodywork, aluminum alloy bonnet, doors skins, fuel door, and boot lid, Perspex side and rear windows, spartan interior trim and soundproofing deletion. With increasing engine displacements and a progression of induction and aerodynamic effects modifications, the CSL became the grist for the marque's competition forays through 1976. A proven race winner in the European Touring Car Championship, Le Mans, German Touring Car and FIA Group 5 events, and the American IMSA Camel GT series.

Vintage Rally Proven, Tuned & Ready Enjoy!

According to BMW Classic Group Archive, 2212279 was completed February 25, 1972 and delivered new to Italy July 7, 1972 - wearing Golf paint (070) over standard Black upholstery. This particular CSL is one of just 169 first-series examples built between May 1971 and July 1972, noted for their carbureted induction. It's believed the car was exported to the United States in the 1970's and assumed ownership in the Atlanta area. The car was later acquired in 1986 by a well-known Colorado BMW collector, and would remain in the family's care until early 2014. The CSL would receive a comprehensive restoration beginning in the early 1990s. During the restorative work, the original 3.0L engine block 2212279 was substituted for and incredibly peppy 3.5L (1287639 - M30, 1985 production). Dual-Weber carbureted induction and many original components were retained in the engine bay to maintain factory-like appearance, with a touch of extra power. All mated to a 245/10 C/R five-speed manual gearbox (installed 11/2018). Much of the restoration was supervised by Paul Schultz of Denver, Colorado, with parts sourced from Carl Nelson and advice and expertise provided by model expert Richard Conway. Completed in 1997, the outstanding refurbishment included a quality repaint in black, followed by application of the classic BMW Motorsport stripes.

Acquired by renowned BMW Motorsport collector, Henry Schmitt in March 2014, this striking 3.0 CSL was soon adorned with a handful of details from the later CSL series, including wind splits, rear roof spoiler and matching "Batmobile" style trunk lid.
Importantly, the CSL's original trunk and numbers-matching (2212279) engine block are included with the car. The cabin maintains a very tidy and correct appearance with spartan adornments, front and rear (fiberglass) bucket seats - dressed in corduroy and leatherette. Bespoke black and silver supplemental Coco mats complete the period appearance. Just under 93,500 kms is recorded on the odometer. Much like the engine bay and interior, the luggage compartment is clean, orderly and contains a matching spare tire assembly, jack and tire iron. The CSL's undercarriage is beautifully solid and straight.

In late 2019 DriverSource commissioned a thorough inspection and scheduled tune-up prior to successfully completing the Raduno Classico, Texas Hill Country Rally. The BMW was DYNO tuned and dialed in for optimal performance, along with new 205/70VR14 Michelin XWX tires, brake hoses, various auxiliary repairs, as well as all new filters and fluids. Overall performance is exceptional, the additional lightness and extra performance can truly be felt in this remarkably lively car, even by modern standards. The CSL is prepped and ready for spirited sprints, vintage touring or local display at a moment's notice. This authentic and well-manner and maintained example of one of BMW's most celebrated models is now available for worldwide purchase and delivery from our Houston, Texas showroom.
