This car is one of the neo-classics, reminiscent of the Mercedes-Benz 540k. Factory-built by Phillips Motor Car Corporation in Pompano Beach, Florida and distributed thorough new GM or Cadillac dealerships back in the early 80s, “donor” Corvettes came to the Phillips factory from the St. Louis Corvette assembly plant and the transformation was made. The Berlina body was made from fiberglass with metal reinforcements along with double-walled inner linings of smooth fiberglass under the front fenders. Phillips used the Corvette's cockpit, dashboard, seats, T-top, and running gear.
Original MSRP was a whopping $80,000 back in 1982.
Fewer than 100 Berlinas were built from 1979 through 1983, not considered a “kit car” in any way, rather a factory built original, with actual Corvette VIN# and titled Berlina.
This Berlina is powered by an L48 5.7 liter 350 CID V8, with an LG4 automatic transmission and dual exhaust. The car is loaded with options like power windows, power door locks, power steering, power brakes, A/C, and the full cluster of gauges standard for the Corvette. The engine, powertrain, drivetrain and components are all standard on the 1981 corvette, so can easily be maintained by any mechanic using GM components. VIN for the car is 1G1AY8763BS402276.
This Berlina is garage-kept in good condition, having been driven slightly more 34,000 miles, mostly to car shows. There is some interior wear but otherwise the car is clean, especially the exterior. It had a complete exhaust system upgrade last year.
The Philips Berlina was the feature car in Vette Vues Magazine, May, 2013 issue. This car is registered with the Antique Automobile Club of America, ACCA Vehicle #27705, certification number #022. It's been shown in many car shows, winning or placing in several Florida events, including winning a National First Prize Winners Plaque in judging class 35C at the 2013 AACA event in Lakeland, FL. For those who admire the grandeur of the 1930s but prefer modern drivability, this car is a great alternative. The Phillips Berlina is one of the finest.
