For Sale at Auction: 1967 Iso Grifo GL in Paris, France

Vehicle Description

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' Paris event, 5 February 2020.
Estimate:
€200,000 - €250,000

  • Offered from the Poster Car Collection
  • Originally owned by Righteous Brothers founding member Bobby Hatfield
  • Cosmetically and mechanically freshened in the mid-2000s
  • One of 200 Series I examples built and 413 total examples

Chassis no. GL 640068 was approximately the 68th Iso Grifo example built, completing assembly in late July 1966. Specified for the United States, the Grifo was equipped with a 350 cu. in. V-8 engine , a four-speed gearbox, Campagnolo wheels, and a 3.07 rear-axle ratio.

It was sold new to Bobby Hatfield, one of the original singers of the famed rock and roll band The Righteous Brothers, whose hits included 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'' and 'Unchained Melody'. As confirmed by a placard that remains affixed to the Grifo's dashboard, Hatfield commissioned the well-known Kustom Kulture luminary George Barris to finish the exterior, and it is believed that he painted the coachwork metallic gold, as suggested by paint samples discovered during a later refurbishment.

Subsequently sold to fellow California resident Larry Valie, the well-maintained Iso remained in the Golden State for many years, eventually joining a significant Ferrari-focused collection. In 2005 the Grifo was purchased from the collection by a British enthusiast who conducted a mechanical freshening and bare-metal repaint in the current maroon and reupholstered the interior with beige leather. It was sold to its present owner in 2014 and would make a fantastic addition to any collection of Italian grand tourers and etceterini.

To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/pa20.
