Bridgestone Potenza tires As the 20th Century drew to a close,
Porsche did the unthinkable ? it changed the formula for its iconic
911 model for the first time since 1963. The Porsche 996 is the
result, with its water-cooled flat six (still in the rear) leading
the modifications. This low mileage example comes from a local
owner and is a very tidy Porsche 996 Coupe finished in Arctic
Silver exterior. Time marches on, even for Porsche?s stalwart 911.
The company?s ground-breaking vehicle finally switched to a
water-cooled engine in place of the air-cooled one it used for the
previous 40 years. What the company kept the same was the engine?s
rear location and overall body shape that have made the car so
successful and famous in sports car circles. Dressed in Arctic
Silver with black trim, the car?s original paint is in overall very
good condition. The 911?s bodywork is straight and solid, its
engine bay is very tidy, the cargo area is clean. The battery is
clean and appears newer, tucked away in the trunk, away from engine
heat and the body-colored bumpers are in very good condition.
Rolling on Bridgestone Potenza tires, size 225/40R18 up front and
285/30R18 in back, each tire is mounted on a factory 18? Carrera II
five spoke wheels. The tires are in good condition while the wheels
are in good, original order but do have some minor road rash. Under
that vented rear wing is the 3.6L DOHC, SMPI, 24-valve high-output,
horizontally-opposed and water-cooled six-cylinder engine with a
VarioCam Plus variable valve timing system. Fuel injection and
electronic ignition are fully-integrated and the car sports a
Motronic ME 7.8 engine management system. This motor is mated to a
Tiptronic Automatic transmission (code 249). Driver convenience and
safety features are plentiful ? Air-conditioning, Force sensitive
power rack-and-pinion steering, Four-wheel disc brakes with
anti-lock (ABS) with cross-drilled rotors, Dual front airbags and
door-mounted side impact airbags, Cruise control, Power door locks,
Power windows with 1-touch down, Six-way power seats, Headlight
washers, 4 spoke sport steering wheel, Litronic Headlights and
Remote keyless entry. Inside, the black leather bucket seats are in
excellent condition, while the matching carpet is in very good
order, as is the black headliner. In back is a 50/50 split-folding
rear seat. There?s a optional four-spoke, sport steering wheel that
telescopes and is in fine shape, the inner door panels and
dashboard are in fine condition, as is the center console. The 996
had little in common with its predecessor, with the first all new
chassis platform since the original 911 and a new, water-cooled
engine. Technically, it was a major change, a complete breakthrough
from the original car other than overall layout. Development was
shared with its entry-level sibling, the roadster-only Boxster,
which was introduced around the same time, including the front
suspension, various interior components, and the engine, all of
which were enlarged for the 996. However, the multi-link rear
suspension was derived from the preceding 993. At its debut, the
996 featured the most significant change from the classic 911
series: a water-cooled engine replacing the previously air-cooled
engine. Progressively stringent emissions and noise regulations,
environmental concerns, a higher expectation for refinement and the
need for a high-performance, four valve per cylinder engine made
the switch necessary. Other major changes include a completely new
platform having a sleeker body with a more raked windshield, and a
re-designed interior along with new ?fried egg? shaped headlamps
instead of previous ?bug eye? headlamps. If you?re not searching
