Vehicle Description
1968 Chevrolet Nova
The 1960s Chevy II/Nova was one of Chevrolet's bestselling models
and was sold as a compact car. It didn't take General Motors long
to realize they could put some of their bigger engines in these
cars and people would buy them for performance as well. Hence a
Nova ad that states "The Sleeper Awakes"
Dignifying our showroom space here at Classic Auto Mall is this
Nova SS Stunner. I say this because one look at the fit, finish,
and paint on this car and you will not be able to restrain yourself
from being impressed. A certainly assured job well done, very few
faults, definitely a show car, however you do not need to be afraid
of taking it out on the weekends and blow out of some the carbon
buildup as dad used to say! A wizard of awes!
Exterior
All nicely restored chrome and trim work dots this car from stem to
stern, and is contrasted by very a nicely painted body in black.
Just a few scratches on the paint here and there but really mostly
unremarkable, we did note some rust bubbling on the lower quarter
panels. Dual vents adorn the hood, and a fastback smoothly sloping
rear deck give this Nova a very aerodynamic look for its time when
aerodynamics were not usually a consideration. A side view shows
this baby has a great stance, and the lower rocker trim is just a
bit raked forward. Emphasizing this look are 17-inch polished
American Racing Torque Thrust wheels with smaller 215/45R17's up
front, and 245/45R17's on back. Through these wheels one can see
larger brake discs and snappy big red calipers. Also for just a
smidge of the menacing look, lightly tinted windows are all around.
Tasteful, elegant, and an ass kicker all wrapped up in 1 will wish
you down the yellow brick road.
Interior
Special, custom and red would be 3 great words to describe the
customized interior. I'll throw a curve ball out there and start
with the trunk which is totally customized, wrapped in red vinyl
and pristine red carpet on the pan. On the vertical panel rising
from the trunk pan are dual Kicker 10-inch speakers and on the
sides some smaller tweeters. Moving upfront to the passenger
compartment blazing red split bench saddles await which are covered
in a tuck and roll suede cloth, and surrounded by smooth red
bolsters. The front bench stretches from door panel to door panel
which are also red, and done up real snazzy like with clean badging
and chrome cranks with black knobs. Textural eye candy continues on
the rear matching bench. Peering to the hood we note a custom dash
with a simplified black smooth panel for the instrument cluster
made up of white faced AutoMeter gauges airflow sliders and a
digital Kenwood which is attached to a Custom Audio amplifier
system, and then the rear woofers and tweeters. On the passenger
side we have the autograph of Chip Foose, noted automotive designer
who at one point ogled this car and thought it autograph worthy.
Red carpet floods the floors, and is very clean as is a tight, you
guessed it, red felted headliner.
Drivetrain
Like a pair of Dorothy's slippers this engine bay gleams and
screams, literally, for power and your attention. Just a
beautifully finished engine bay, all spit shined, supple rubber
hoses and the gleaming orange block, matte silver Edelbrock
Performer 2.0 intake, and a chromed 427 badged air filter covering
a 4-barrel Holley carb. This is a 454 V8 circa 1973-1990 which
pushes power rearward to a 10-bolt rear through a TH350 3-speed
automatic transmission.
Undercarriage
The undercarriage has been the beneficiary of the brush and touchup
wash with all rust free surfaces, a sturdy unibody frame with clean
rockers and an X pattern 3 inch stainless steel exhaust. Noted are
extra-large brakes along with new front shocks and springs.
Drive-Ability
With a turn of the key the 454ci V8 lights right up, and when you
select D it goes forward, fast. With great acceleration, good
handling, and easy to drive...the experience was very nice.
With this quality of a restoration/modification you almost cannot
go wrong. Cars like this are ever increasing in value, and this one
is definitely an eye catcher. I can hear it harkening now "I'll get
you my pretty!"
