Vehicle Description
1962 Chevrolet Impala SS
The 3rd generation Impala ran from 1961-1964 and would end up being
one of the most important American cars to date. These were the
game changing years in which the Super Sport and the world famous
409 engine were released. The SS Impala played an integral role in
formulating what we now know as the original muscle cars.
Here in the corridors of the Classic Auto Mall we have all kinds of
cars with all kinds of purposes. Some classics to be shown, others
to be driven, and others to do both. This car is definitely both to
the max! A resto-mod if you will, with air bagged suspension, LED
tail lamps, 1 piece California bumpers, tall wheels and low profile
tires, and some snappy engine mods to make it go even faster, and
look even nicer.
Exterior
Bathed in gorgeous Black to the belt line, then after jumping over
a wide straight trim spear with inserted swirl machined pattern, we
change over to Yellow Pearl Flip. This paint covers very straight
rust-free panels that mind their gaps with military precision.
Plenty of chromed trim in excellent condition wraps around the
windows, 1-piece California bumpers, grille and rear deck panels.
All glass is like new with a tinted front windscreen. Badging is
showroom, and a power antenna has been added. On all 4 corners we
see 20-inch rally style rims and wheels and these are wrapped by
245/35/R20 front rubber, and 275/45/R20's on the back.
Interior
Consigner tells us it is a complete refresh for the interior, and
with a swing of the doors one would definitely believe this. Very
nice door panels in black vinyl square stitched padded panel uppers
complete with chromed buttons at their intersections, and
horizontal ribbed lowers delineated by a swooping downward chrome
trim. Cranks are like new as is armrest and its trimmings. Moving
to the seats we see very smooth black low buckets framed on either
side with wide chromed surrounding trim, and more chrome buttoned
stitched uppers. The back seat is continuing this pattern only in
bench form with speaker in the middle. A center console is seen and
sporting a Hurst white knobbed shifter. The padded dash top in
black has a pristine instrument clustered and buttoned and knobbed
dash front, and Vintage air has been neatly added. A nice digital
back lit multi-function gauge cluster if you will, is easily
handheld and sits loosely on the center console. There is an AM/FM
digital radio neatly installed, also noted is a completely
upholstered trunk. Carpet is very nice, and headliner is
wonderfully tight. Beautiful job inside on this refresh.
Drivetrain
Opening the hood, we might as well be looking at this car in the
showroom with its clean and mean orange block and Chevrolet badged
valve covers. This is a 327ci V8 that is correct for this car and
has had a Comp cam installed and original heads were replaced by
Dart Heads. On top is a 4-barrel Edelbrock carb which pushes fuel
and air through an Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap intake. Smooth
black headers are mounted to either side of this V8, and nice no
corrosion bolt ons and supple hoses are seen throughout. Out back,
a 4-speed M20 Muncie manual transmission is mounted.
Undercarriage
A frame off restoration always never ceases to amaze me how nice an
undercarriage can be, and this job did not disappoint. Jet black
frame and suspension parts mix with pristine white floor pans, and
new gas tank and shiny Turbo muffler exhaust. Ride Tech Air
suspension is seen on the front and rear, and power disc brakes are
now upfront and power drums for the rear. Also noted is a Hotchkis
sway bar.
Drive-Ability
As expected, it was an E ticket ride with plenty of power and ear
candy with a turn of the key. Great acceleration, nice handling,
and quick stopping. The interior is Uber comfortable and very
clean, and the stereo sounds great.
A complete package here in the form of a 1962 Impala SS. Plenty of
mods, new technology, and some old school engine upgrades. Throw on
some snappy Black over Yellow Pearl Flip, gobs of chrome trimmings
and some 20-inch wheels with low profile tires, and you'll be goin'
and showing' in early 60's retro style.
