A few years ago, a young local police officer of my acquaintance
asked my opinion about finding a convertible sports car. His budget
was limited to $5,000 and he still wanted something reliable and
economical to operate. My usual answer to that question would be
the Mazda MX-5 or an MGB. There was one problem though. He and his
wife had a young child and thus required a rear seat. Nothing came
to mind in the price range he wanted so unfortunately, I was of no
help to him. The third generation Capri like we offer here would
have been the perfect answer. Until we acquired this one, I really
had no awareness of just how nice they are. This Capri is powered
by a 1.6 liter, 16 valve DOHC four, an engine it shares with the
Mazda 323 and is rock solid reliable. Backed up by a five speed
manual, it's great fun to drive and its front wheel drive gives
confidence in adverse weather as well. The small rear seats mean
the kids can ride along or provide a good place for grocery bags.
When the weather turns nice, the top easily stows, and you have
open air motoring at a price that's hard to beat. Our example here
is in good shape mechanically and cosmetically. The body is solid
without any rust issues and the paint is very presentable. So if
the dreary days of winter are making you think about top down
cruising in the coming spring and summer, don't overlook this
Capri. At well under $5,000, it's hard to better it for the money.
