This 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle SS convertible was sold new via A-Plan
to a GM employee by Reed-Draper Chevrolet of Bay City, Michigan and
was acquired by the seller in 1984, reportedly from its second
owner. A subsequent four-year rotisserie refurbishment by Ice Nine
Group of Clinton Township, Michigan was completed in 2014 and
included bodywork, a color change to Ascot Blue over White Elk
vinyl upholstery, rebuilds of its numbers-matching 350ci V8 and
three-speed automatic transmission, and more. Factory options
include the Super Sport package, a power folding top, F41
performance suspension, a 2.73:1 Positraction differential,
power-assisted steering and front disc brakes, and an AM/8-Track
stereo. This Chevelle is offered with build sheets, owner's and
service manuals, a refurbishment spreadsheet, car show trophies,
and a clean Michigan title in the seller's name.
Originally Mulsanne Blue (26), the car was repainted in Ascot Blue
(24) with white stripes (D88) during the refurbishment. Photos
taken during the work can be seen in the gallery below along with
those showing the power-operated white convertible top both raised
and lowered. A video of the top in operation can be seen here.
Factory options include tinted glass, SS-specific trim, and a
driver-side sport mirror. A walk-around video is viewable here.
Kelsey Hayes 15?x7? wheels wear reproduction Goodyear Polyglas GT
radial tires, with a matching spare and jack fitted under the trunk
floor. Power-assisted steering and brakes with front discs were
optioned from the factory along with the F41 performance suspension
package.
The cabin has been reupholstered from black to White Elk vinyl
(743) using a PUI Platinum series interior kit. Features include a
sport steering wheel (NK4), a Delco AM/FM/8-Track stereo (UM1), an
electric clock, rubber floor mats, and more. Just under 99k miles
are shown on the five-digit odometer, 10k of which have been added
by the seller over 35 years. The windshield wiper motor is
reportedly non-functional.
The matching-numbers 350ci L48 V8 was reportedly hot-tanked and
overbored .030? by GM Performance engineers prior to installation
of 10.1:1 compression pistons, hydraulic lifters, rockers and a
camshaft from Howards Cams, replacement bearings and seals, as well
as a new oil pump and timing components. The stock cylinder heads
were also hot-tanked, given a three-angle valve job, and fitted
with new springs and rockers. The stock Rochester Quadrajet
four-barrel carburetor was rebuilt using Cliff's High Performance
metering rods, new jets, and an ethanol-resistant accelerator pump,
while the Harrison radiator was fitted with a three-row core. An
oil change was performed in May 2019. A start-up video is viewable
here.
The engine shows stamping #K180111, which matches the VIN plate
shown in the gallery. Period-correct underhood decals, tags, and
assembly line-style paint daubs were added during the
refurbishment.
The replacement three-speed TH350 automatic transmission is
reportedly period-correct and was rebuilt by a GM Powertrain
engineer with a B&M torque converter. Power is sent to the rear
wheels via a Positraction rear end with 2.73:1 gears. A Waldron
reproduction stainless steel dual exhaust system with factory-style
resonators has also been fitted.
Three build sheets, owner's and service manuals, a refurbishment
spreadsheet compiled by the seller, and car show trophies are
included in the sale. The car was featured in a 2015 OnStar
commercial and was a participant in the 2016 Ault Park Concours
d'Elegance in Cincinnati, Ohio. A cold start and additional
walk-around video are viewable below.
