Vehicle Description
1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Aero Coupe
Once upon a time, the "stock cars" that raced on the NASCAR circuit
actually bore a relationship to the vehicles you could buy at a new
car dealership. "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday" wasn't just an
advertising tagline. It was a showroom reality. Chevy bumped up
production for the 1987 model year, running off more than 3,500 of
the SS Aero-coupes as opposed to a mere 200 in 1986 to meet the
NASCAR rules. (Thx to Larry Edsall@ CC.comJournal for this intro
info!)
For consignment, an unbelievably low mileage car with an astounding
23.5 original miles. A consigner/car dealer bought this car and
stuffed it away in who knows where until it shows up at our
doorstep as a babe in blanket 32-year-old new factory born car. It
is very clean, has a few faults from sitting, but with only 23
miles I'm sure the break in oil, and gas will need to be
changed!
Exterior
Paint code 11U (WHITE) adorns the exterior of this car, and it has
few faults, in its 23 mile journey, to the exterior. Absolutely no
rust, no faults excepting the ones applied at the factory (a slight
factory spray orange peel, and some fading on the nose due to the
neoprene degradation the white is slightly off from the body and
it's to the yellow side, BUT you have to really study it.). The
optional "T" top with removable see through smoked glass panels is
on top, provides passengers with an open-air motoring experience
without the fussing over a total convertible. This two-door model
features a fastback-style rear window, rear deck lid spoiler, and a
blacked-out grille. A trio of racing stripes races around the below
belt line of this car and they are in an orange to red fade as they
get larger and wider towards the rockers. Noted on all 4 corners
are the quasi honeycombed mag style 5 bolt wheels with the original
rubber wrapping them. Note that this rubber will need to be
replaced as time sitting on the same spot has rendered them with
major flat spots. The best feature of the Aero version is the rear
glass with the curved center glass and the triangular glass seen
after the B pillar. All badging for this car is aerodynamic
stickers which run flush with the bodywork.
Interior
Maroon cloth buckets with smooth maroon vinyl bolsters are in
front, and these flank a maroon center console with a storage box,
and housing the automatic T shifter. We make note of all the
chromed toggles and bezels, have a peppering of corrosion in green
patina form. This may be due to moisture inside the cabin, however
there is no smell of mustiness or any mold seen. In the rear is a
pattern matching bench and it is fade free and pristine, never
used. Carpet is showroom and is thick pile and beautiful. The 80's
square and rectangle design applies to the original dash, very
clean and all functioning knobs and levers. Of course, we need to
mention the trunk, which is showroom, nary even a mark in the
carpet. Also, of note there is no dry rot on any rubber
surfaces.
Drivetrain
As we look under the hood, we can see an original numbers matching
engine, very clean and very little dust even to note. This V8 is in
305ci HO configuration, is topped by a 4-barrel carburetor, and
backed by a 4-speed 200R4 automatic tranny. A 10-bolt 3.73 geared
axle is in back.
Undercarriage
Some minimal surface rust on the usual suspects (rear, driveshaft,
some suspension parts) but otherwise pristine, and rust free all
around. Independent coil springs upfront and 4 link with coil
springs on the rear provide the ride. Power disc brakes on front
and power drum brakes for the rear, and they WILL pass
inspection!
Drive-Ability
We would not dare drive a car with this low of mileage, although as
reported it starts right up and on the push into the mall, we
noticed major flat spots on the original tires.
Amazingly preserved this 23 mile Aero time capsule from 1987 is
something to behold. It is just unheard of. A few faults with the
neoprene color fade in front, and the green corrosion on the
interior chrome, but otherwise just like the day it was driven from
the showroom.
