Vehicle Description
HIGHLIGHTS: Unmolested first generation Firebird! A true barn find,
this car comes with a great story as it is said to be a two-owner
car. Purchased from the wife of the late original owner, the
current owner was planning a big-block 4-speed swap. After cleaning
it up and making it roadworthy, the current owner had a change of
heart given the overall originality of this car.
It has had one repaint, lots of recent mechanical work done, and is
sitting on Pontiac rally wheels. Aside from that and some cosmetic
refreshments, you're looking at a Firebird that has survived the
test of time without needing a restoration. A variety of original
paperwork and other documentation are included with the sale.
Includes the original window sticker and PHS Docs.
BODY OVERVIEW: The body is clean and straight, with all of the
proper emblems and trim still in place and in good condition. It
has been repainted, but there are no indications that this car has
been fully taken apart or restored. For an unrestored vehicle, this
Firebird is in amazing condition.
This is a car that really captures what Pontiac was about during
the late 1960s. It isn't a fancy high-end model, and it was never a
flashy color. The current wheels are 15" Pontiac rally wheels, but
the original 14" steel wheels and wheel covers are included with
new tires mounted. If one wanted to return the appearance to 100%
original, these wheels could be simply bolted on. For a car that
has never seen a full restoration, the body is in remarkable
condition.
PAINT CONDITION OVERVIEW: This car was repainted once long ago. It
was stashed in a barn from 1980 until 2018 after the original owner
passed away. The paint job is showing a little age and there are
some dings to be found here and there, but this car is far from
needing a repaint.
INTERIOR CONDITION OVERVIEW: The green vinyl interior is the
perfect color choice to go with the Verdoro Green exterior. The
story goes that this was the weekend car of a farmer, and while it
is very much a "no-frills" type of car, it was purchased to be a
nice change from the farm truck. It is almost impossible to find an
unmolested Firebird that hasn't been cloned into one thing or
another, and even less common to find one that hasn't seen a full
restoration.
The interior of this car is nearly immaculate, and when it was
pulled from the barn the original owner's wife stated that the
odometer reading was correct. With it currently showing just over
69,000 miles, that alone is quite a feat! While there is no
documentation to prove the mileage, the interior condition would
lead one to believe that it is correct.
MECHANICAL OVERVIEW: Under the hood sits a Pontiac 350 small block
V8. This is the correct engine for this car, and is still equipped
with the two-barrel carburetor. A 4-barrel carburetor and intake
manifold are included with the sale, but the current owner opted
against altering this car from original.
The engine runs great, and this Pontiac may not be a drag car, but
it certainly has adequate power! Hooked up to the V8 is the
original 3-speed floor-shift transmission. This transmission shifts
smoothly, and is something pretty unique to find in a Firebird
these days. All the fun of a 4-speed with one less gear! Not only
is the underside of this car clean and freshly repainted to prevent
rust, but a new dual exhaust system has been run. The engine bay
has been cleaned and painted as necessary to return this car to its
former glory. Last but not least, the front brakes have been
upgraded to discs and a new master cylinder has been installed.
WHAT YOU'LL LOVE ABOUT THIS CAR: The original style that is so
rarely seen these days, as well as the cool story that comes with
it.
WHAT YOU MIGHT HATE ABOUT THIS CAR: The fact that it isn't a
high-performance model, and the lack of a fourth gear.
DOES IT NEED ANYTHING? This car is turn-key as it sits, but there
is a slight engine vibration present. Although a new clutch kit has
been installed as well as various other new mechanical parts, we
suspect that an unbalanced flywheel or harmonic balancer may be the
culprit.
WHAT BUYER IS LOOKING FOR THIS CAR? Anyone looking for a classic
muscle car without the high price tag would be interested in this
car! Whether you're looking for a turn-key cruiser to enjoy in your
spare time, or a clean original example to hop up and make your
own, this Firebird is sure to fit the bill.
