Up for sale is my original, numbers-matching, 1980 Turbo Trans Am WS6 finished in Ontario Grey over Oyster vinyl. With only 52,000 original miles and lovingly taken care of, she is ready to drive and enjoy.
The 1980 Trans Am with the LU8 turbo engine package includes the 4.9-liter 301ci engine, the very desirable WS6 suspension package, and automatic transmission. Pontiac offered the first forced induction production engine, a turbo charged 301 V8 in 1980-81. The 4.9L Turbo was unique in that it had a stronger block with thicker cylinder walls and a lower compression ratio given the increased boost pressure created by the turbo system. Also included were newly developed internals including forged pistons, high pressure oil pump, a roller fillet crankshaft with 2 counterbalances, fully baffled oil pan and turbo specific exhaust manifolds. The 301 Turbo was officially factory rated at 210hp and 345lb ft of torque and mated to a TH350 automatic transmission and 3.08 Posi rear end.
Mechanically, this Trans Am is outstanding. Worked closely with TTA Performance (specializing in tuning and restoration of these early turbo firebirds: https://ttaperformance.com/) to respectfully open the intake and exhaust system so this car runs hard and strong with an exhaust sound that is music to your ears. Air intake system is a true cold-air draw through the hood bulge and the 2.5” free-flow exhaust mates directly to the turbo. Under my ownership, I replaced the following: New GM 4-core radiator, water pump, alternator, master cylinder, ignition system, belts and hoses, power steering, A/C components (blows very cold), all new tires, headlights, fuel pump, and battery. She is in perfect tune with the correct DX secondary metering rods in the Rochester 850cfm 4BBL carburetor. All fluids are changed to include TH 350 transmission fluid and filter. Timing chain cover resealed – no oil leaks. Shell Rotella T5 motor oil is fresh as is the factory filter. The 4.9L 301cid Pontiac V8 makes great power - hard pulling all the way through red line courtesy the turbo charger. Absolutely no smoke on start up or acceleration - she is well-sorted and trouble-free.
Interior was recently refreshed and shows like new. Front seats recovered in the correct factory “special edition” covers and foam, headliner is new along with the cabin light, all gauges work along with the original Delco radio and cassette player! There are no rips/tears/cracks in any of the interior components and the dash is as nice today as it was in 1980.
The body is painted in Ontario Grey metallic. Paint condition is excellent. Waxed regularly using only Griots Garage products, she is rust free and is garage stored in Dallas and only driven in good weather. All lights work, decals present very nicely, BF Goodwrench performance tires are new, WS6 suspension is tight, and 4-wheel disc brakes work flawlessly. In the trunk is the original spare tire with all original equipment to include tire inflater.
Additional pictures and videos are available upon request. I have all original paperwork, sales material, build sheet, and records. Please schedule an appointment to see. I am happy to ship anywhere using your shipping company of choice (I also have recommendations of carriers I’ve used). Given the market, the condition and low production numbers of this WS6, all-original numbers matching,T-Top delete, unique color combo car, she is a rare find. I am looking for the right buyer that will properly care for and appreciate this 2nd generation turbo car. They won’t be building any more of these; preserving and enjoying this piece of American muscle car history is important.
