Vehicle Description
1968 Chevrolet Chevelle SS
Every now and then, an automaker releases a car that's nearly
perfect in stock form. The list is short but the 1968 Chevelle SS
is definitely one of those cars. Gaining a following that few
Chevrolet's have seen outside of the tri-five world, nice examples
never stick around our showroom for long.
This amazing 1968 Chevelle SS complete with black vinyl top, 46,146
actual miles, big block 396ci mill, right down to the radio that
still works is sure to continue the bow tie legacy of a car that is
nearly perfect in stock form.
Exterior
If we compare the trim tag to the actual car, we see that it is a
respray of Butternut Yellow, replacing the factory Palomino Ivory.
The panels are very straight, and gaps are minded well. Upon very
close inspection on our lift we note that there has been some body
filler applied at one time on the passenger lower door and front
quarter, most likely to remediate some denting. The paint is
overall very nice, with good shine and very few inclusions. A few
areas of cracking can be seen on the Butternut color and the lower
black rocker paint. A sporty wrap around black stripe runs
horizontally across the hood, drops down to almost the mid front
quarter, then runs rearward to the rear quarter at the wheel well.
Under this framing the rocker is a solid black stripe imitating the
above wrap around stripe. An aggressively angled front grille has
dual headlights that flank a mostly black egg crate grille with a
pristine SS badge in the middle. The black vinyl top is in nice
condition and does not have any rust bubbles typically seen on the
lower B pillar area on vinyl topped Chevrolets. Bumpers are all
clean and shiny, and 15-inch rally wheels are all around wrapped in
redline radials.
Interior
A gander at the trim tag again shows that there is a newer black
vinyl interior replacing the medium gold vinyl that is specified on
the build trim tag. Either way it is very nicely preserved with
clean and straight padded door panels in black and buckets also
that retain their good padding and nice shine. A good looking
center console races between the buckets, has a storage
compartment, and houses the aircraft throttle style (horse shoe)
twin vertical post shifter. Looking to the dash we see all original
equipment nice and clean and in very good condition. The same can
be said for the steering wheel and the radio still works! Hanging
below the dash are a trio of aftermarket white faced gauges for
volts, oil pressure and water temp. Above is a tight headliner, and
below is a flood of good condition black carpet.
Drivetrain
Automotive jewelry would best describe the engine bay with a bright
orange colored block and intake manifold, and some chrome valve
covers and air cleaner. This is a numbers matching 396ci V8 which
pumps out 325 horses. A factory correct Rochester 4-barrel
carburetor feeds fossils to the mill to burn, and turn a numbers
matching 3-speed TH400 automatic transmission, and a 12-bolt rear.
All factory restored to perfection.
Undercarriage
Underneath is looking all good with no surface rust, an abundance
of rustproofing/undercoating on some surfaces, some slight
cracking, and all structurally sound frame, floorpans and rockers.
Drum brakes are all around, and a chambered dual exhaust snakes its
way rearward from the drip free underbelly of the engine.
Drive-Ability
A turn of the key and we are all fired up. We shift to D and we are
off like a prom dress! This car runs great, handles well, and has
awesome acceleration. It is ergonomically near perfect for my
stature which some may call mildly portly, and under 6 feet tall. A
nice ride all in all.
Probably the best year design wise for the Chevelle, they got it
right with the angled front and rear, nicely placed chrome trim,
and snazzy striping. The engine bay is just beautiful on this car,
and despite not being what the trim tag states, it is a great
combo. A pristine black vinyl top thrown in for some more contrast
and the rally wheels with the red lines doesn't take anything away
either. A classic right here at Classic Auto Mall.
