Vehicle Description
1968 Ford Mustang Coupe
The Mustang created the category of the 'pony' car, a reference to
its distinctive horse logo. The name encompassed all the competitor
cars that were built to try and match the Mustang's success. An
example is the Chevrolet Camaro, which also cemented the image of a
sporty vehicle with a sleek style. Even Ford couldn't have
predicted how successful the car would be. On the opening day,
22,000 units were sold, and dealerships were taking waiting lists
for several days after.
This 1968 example for consignment is a slightly improved version of
the stock 1968 due to a later (mid 1980's) fuel injection unit put
on to feed the upgraded blue blocked 302ci V8. A snazzy interior
and a good sound system, and we are rolling in 1968 style of the
ever popular mustang.
Exterior
Bathed in a very nicely applied Steel Blue, straight steel abounds.
Some gaps are inconsistent but are mostly straight. The iconic
hockey stick cove is present in the rear quarters and it flows into
the doors. From the front bumper, grille galloping horse and wheel
well as well as rocker trim all chrome is very nice with no
dimpling or dulling. For 1968 styling becomes slightly more
aggressive on a simpler grille and deeper headlights, and out back
the former outward V shaped sergeant stripe taillights have now
been inverted to inward, but still using 6 individual lights.
Original wheels have been replaced with 16-inch pony wheels which
started life on a 1994-1998 Mustang.
Interior
2 tone blue in light and dark bounces all around this interior.
Door panels are light blue painted uppers and lowers, and vinyl
covered dark blue panel in the middle with just a touch of chrome
trim surround. Front buckets continue with dark blue horizontal
stitched inner panels, and light blue bolsters. This continues into
the back seat bench. The buckets flank an added on center console
complete with a storage compartment, power window switches and a
dual cup holder. Further forward on the hump is the T shift lever.
Hanging below the center of the dash is an aftermarket AM/FM/CD
player. In place of the original radio is a new panel which houses
some knobs and lights. Factory A/C is still there as is the
original instrument cluster, and steering wheel. Dark blue carpet
is in good condition and floods all the floors. Light blue rubber
floor mats are also seen, and these have a 3D galloping horse
molded into them. The headliner is nice and tight dark blue vinyl.
Looking way back into the trunk we see very good condition dark
gray carpet lining, even over the spare.
Drivetrain
Replacing the original 289ci V8 is now a 302ci V8 with electronic
fuel injection on top. A C4 3-speed automatic transmission is on
the back of this 302 and pushes power rearward to a Ford 8-inch
rear. Overall condition of engine bay is not restored but clean
original.
Undercarriage
Absolutely no rust surface or otherwise is seen underneath in a
powder coated and black painted environment which consists of the
frame and floorpans and rockers. Stainless exhaust pipes are
present along with Dynomax mufflers for this dual exhaust. Power
disc brakes are upfront and power drums on the back.
Drive-Ability
This car fired right up, and after a bit of a warm up period, ran
very smoothly, drove beautifully, and had good acceleration and
handling. It is a good highway cruiser as well. It is also noted it
has a nice engine sound emanating from the exhaust.
Well done and not like your steak, but in the sense of the
restoration and upgrading of this 68 Mustang. Nice upgrades, sound
system, center console, power windows and 16-inch wheels. Good
chrome all around, and we are all buttoned up and ready to ride our
little pony into the sunset...(Queue the tumbleweeds!)
