Starting out as high quality truck builders the Graham brothers
eventually became so successful they were bought by the Dodge
brothers and began working for them producing Dodge trucks.
Chrysler comes along and merges with Dodge, and the brothers did
not care to work for Chrysler, so they left, bought a company
called Paige trucks, and eventually becoming Graham Automobile
Company in 1930. The Grahams also at one time owned Madison Square
Garden, and the rest as they say is history.
If you are looking for a real show car that is so unusual, you will
have virtually no competition at the show because there will be no
other examples at said show, this is your car. Restored in Georgia
at Dixie Dream Rods the owner at the time went in with an open
checkbook, a decision which he regretted to this day, but he had
one heck of a car. Our fortunate consigner comes along and the car
is available, and he snaps it up. For the past 6 years he has
gathered a collection of trophies and is now ready to move on. His
loss will definitely be your gain.
Exterior
Design line was king in the mid 1930's and the Graham Brothers were
trying to make their mark on the automotive industry. With its
skirted fenders, swept back shield style grille and corresponding
flared down dual front bumpers as well as a cap less radiator for
the outside shell (moved inside) aerodynamics were shaping cars by
the year. A dual cowl hood sports chrome speared vents which are on
either side. Nice running boards connect the fenders, straight door
panels with near perfect gaps and power windows now adorn this car.
Looking towards the rear we see the rear window surround which
licks toward the rear roofline bottom like a handlebar mustache. A
swooping rear with an encased "continental" spare tire and bumper
setup and pristine curving bumper framing the bottom, this car is a
thing of beauty. 16-inch polished American Racing Torque Thrust
wheels are all around, and add a wonderful highlight to the
car.
Interior
The original bench seat has been replaced with 2 buckets and now
has perfect padding and saddle color leather enveloping their
surfaces. A rear bench sports the same and is in excellent
condition. The door panels are embossed saddle colored leather with
a lightning bolt design running through the center. Leather also
covers the pillars and moves upward to the headliner where more 3D
embossing is at play in the ceiling panel. Black carpeting floods
the floors, and noted are a CD player, Vintage Air and front bucket
seat belts. The dash has Auto Meter vintage gauges which are
fronted by a beautiful banjo style steering wheel wrapped in burl
wood for the actual wheel.
Drivetrain
A 350ci V8 crate engine is tucked neatly within the cowls and
shines brightly with its single 4-barrel Edelbrock carburetor atop.
Bolted on back is a TH350 3-speed automatic and a 9-inch Ford
rear.
Undercarriage
With an open checkbook, it buys you many things including a totally
frame off restoration on which they do work on the frame. This one
they did and now we see perfect structural steel framing, excellent
tubs, and pristine mechanicals, in the form of a Mustang II front
end, power discs up front, and power drums on the rear.
Drive-Ability
Awesome! Need we say more and what would one expect? Simply
awesome!
Made mostly for show, this rare example presents nicely on every
corner of the restoration. Noted, even the seals have been
eliminated from this car, so the gaps remain more consistent.
Although I would not do a 300-mile drive in the pouring rain, even
though the car is perfectly capable. Gorgeous leather interior,
upgraded sound system, power brakes, and keeping its original line
not chopped, shaved or any other tricks that generally comes with a
resto-mod job. A very restored original.
