Vehicle Description
Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 1972 BMW E9 3.0CS. This
sunroof coupe is just out of long-term ownership (22 years) and is
finished in attractive Fjord Blue over tan leather interior. It
received a paint and body refresh in the late 1990s completed to a
good driver standard, along with a mechanical refit consisting of a
3.5 liter M30 and five-speed transmission. The VIN indicates a U.S.
car but it's fitted with metric instrumentation, no side
reflectors, city lights in the H4 headlights, and relatively rare
manual front windows with power rear windows.
The previous enthusiast owner drove this E9 approximately 10,000
miles after the build was completed in the early 2000s but it has
seen relatively few miles over the past two years. The paint and
body still look good after 20 years; the interior is mostly
original and the leather seating surfaces are showing some patina.
Headliner, door panels, dash, original steering wheel and wood are
all in nice condition.
It's a bit of a hotrod with the E32 M30B35 engine fitted with an
unusual euro-market four-barrel intake manifold running a Holley
carburetor, Stahl headers and electronic ignition - this powerplant
is mated to a desirable five-speed gearbox from either an E12 or an
early E24 with a mechanical speedometer drive (so the speedo and
other gauges are working properly). With slightly shorter
differential gearing, power delivery and cruise speeds are just
right. Lowering springs were also installed.
Upon our acquisition we completed an oil service, valve adjustment,
new tires on factory wheels, new ignition coil, floor mats and a
few other odds and ends. Compression was checked and numbers are
excellent and consistent across all six cylinders. This is a good
running car that is considerably faster than stock. It could use a
little buttoning up with some new rubbers, shifter bushings, trim
fitment, sunroof adjustment, etc. but is ready to be pressed into
use immediately.
