Vehicle Description
1974 Ford Galaxie 500 Sedan
A galaxy is a huge collection of gas, dust, and of stars and their
solar systems. A galaxy is held together by gravity. Our galaxy,
the Milky Way, also has a super massive black hole in the middle.
In the late 1950's and early 1960's the automobile manufacturers
seized on the ever-evolving space race and began to emulate
rockets, jets, and made use of astronomical names to present their
offerings for a model year as ultra-modern machines. Hence the use
of the name Galaxy.
For consignment the last year of production, 1974, using the
Galaxie name in the United States. The name lived on in Brazil
until 1983. This example will need some TLC in the form of invasive
rust remediation on the exterior panels. The car runs and drives
nicely and retains a nice interior. Your chance to have the last
year of the iconic Galaxie.
Exterior
Bathed in a Saddle Bronze Metallic respray, we note several areas
of invasive rust. Bubbling on both lower rear quarters, major
damage to the front of the passenger's side rear quarter and
rocker, as well as lower front fender bubbling. Some of these areas
were previously repaired, but the rust has taken back over.
Otherwise panels remain straight with good gaps between the steel
slabs. A dark brown vinyl top is in good condition, and this car
has correct badging all around. Standard Ford wheel covers are all
around.
Interior
Medium Saddle vinyl covers the door panels and has a slight bit of
wood applique. All this is in nice condition. Bench seats are
broadcloth with a diamond pattern inserts and smooth vinyl
bolsters. Gold carpeting covers the floors and is mostly clean with
a few stains and plastic floor mats. The dash is very clean and
original and is in padded brown, and wood applique with plenty of
original factory equipment. Headliner is nice and tight as well as
clean. Overall interior is very nicely preserved.
Drivetrain
Again, all original and unrestored, lots of patina, and some
surface rust. It is a 400ci V8 under the hood, and a 2-barrel
carburetor with a C6 3-speed automatic transmission on back. Ford
9" 3.25 geared rear puts power out to the rear wheels.
Undercarriage
Plenty of surface rust, and even a few areas of unmediated invasive
rust underneath. Floor pans are good, and frame is mostly rust
free. Power disc brakes are on the front, and power drums on the
rear.
Drive-Ability
For a mid 1970's car it starts reasonably quick and runs smooth.
Power steering works well as do power brakes. Suspension feels a
bit worn, but it does provide a nice ride.
The final year for the US Galaxie model, and this car is mostly
original. With a nice preserved interior, a smooth running V8, and
a good color combination, it needs only the TLC on the exterior
rust areas and you will be good to go. Large and in charge, a
cruiser from the square and rectangle design era with a space age
name.
