Our featured 1971 Newport is an impeccable example of the rare Custom Sports Sedan presented in original, un-restored condition showing fewer than 34,790 miles from new. It is a well-optioned car, finished in a very 1970’s shade of Medium Green Poly (code GF3) with a green vinyl roof and complementary green interior. This incredible Chrysler has never been restored, and it is in genuine time-warp condition. The paintwork is excellent, appearing glossy and consistent, belying its 48 years of age. The signature wraparound front bumper of the fuselage-style Chrysler's is excellent, as is the intricate grill it protects. Body side moldings, window trims, and the rear bumper are also in outstanding condition, with only superficial imperfections noted on inspection. The doors fit well, and the body is solid and impressively clean throughout. It rides on original styled steel wheels fitted with correct Goodyear narrow whitewall tires.
Inside, there are more superbly preserved materials and fittings. In both the front and rear compartments, the seats are in fantastic original condition, featuring vinyl side panels with durable fabric inserts. Similarly, the door panels are virtually like new and the dark green loop carpets show practically no wear. Options include a Deluxe AM radio, fender-mounted turn signal indicators, factory air conditioning that functions beautifully, power steering, and power brakes. Plastics on the dash and elsewhere are showroom new, and the original switches and controls work as they should.
As a Newport Custom, this car came standard with the legendary 383 cubic-inch Mopar V8, making 275 horsepower. Incidentally, the 1971 model year was the last year for the proper big-power V8 engines, and by 1972 the once-mighty 440 made considerably less power than this car’s 383. Our Newport also features the heavy-duty automatic transmission, dual exhaust, and front disc brakes. The engine presents as one expects of an unmolested, original 34,790 mile car. Factory finishes are in good order on the valve covers, air cleaner, and inner fender wells. Many of the original fittings remain in place, with signs of recent sympathetic maintenance. It runs as it should, and the car drives beautifully on the road, feeling solid and virtually like-new.
