For Sale: 1952 Alvis TA21 in Lebanon, Missouri

Vehicle Description

HERE IS A VERY RARE TICKFORD-BODIED 1952 ALVIS DROPHEAD COUPE!  THESE CARS DO NOT COME UP FOR SALE OFTEN!  DO NOT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY!

Alvis Cars was a British manufacturing concern headquartered in Coventry, England and founded in 1919.  Throughout the company’s history race cars, aircraft engines and armored military equipment were also produced in addition to passenger vehicles.

The manufacturing operations sustained tremendous damage at the hands of German bombers during World War II, although ironically the building that produced military equipment was the least damaged plant.  Following the end of the war, it took almost two years before Alvis resumed automobile production and then still relied heavily on what pre-war designs and technology with the TA 14 being the company’s first true post-war vehicle.

The TA 14 was replaced in 1050 by the longer, more powerful TA 21.  Powered by the brand-new Alvis 3.0L in-line six-cylinder motor that would be the manufacturer’s base engine until Alvis quit automotive production in 1967,  the TA 21 was available in two body styles-- a four door saloon model bodied by Mulliners of Birmingham and a two-door drophead coupe bodied by coachmaker Tickford.  During the three-year production run a total of 1,316 vehicles came out of the factory, with 1,014 saloon models and only 302 coupes.  There is no clear consensus on how many of that original production exist today.  Swiss coachbuilder Graber placed a standing annual order for a limited number of the TA 21 chassis and created some stunning one-off designs to the point that after 1955 all Alvis automobiles were based on Graber designs but production numbers were drastically reduced over the years until car production ceased in the 1967 model year.  Alvis was taken over by Rover in 1965 and later became part of the British Leyland family.  Many years later the nameplate was resurrected for a line of cars designed primarily for the Asian market.

The TA 21 retained independent front suspension but now used coil springs instead of transvers-mounted leaf springs and leaf springs supported the solid rear axle from its predecessor.  A four-speed manual transmission completed the drivetrain.  The doors continued to be rear-hinged and the seating configuration was separate seats in the font with a rear bench seat that included a passenger arm rest.  The TA 21 was longer than the TA 14.  The introduction of the TA 21 also marked the first time Alvis has used hydraulic brakes, using drums brakes on all four corners.

This 1952 Alvis TA 21 sports a two-tone livery of maroon and white with a maroon soft top.  The maroon leather interior is set off with white piping, creating a classic contrast.  The vehicle presents nicely in all areas and appears to be very correct both cosmetically and mechanically.   The brightwork shines nicely and the wood dash appears to be in excellent condition.  The car shows 81,740 kilometers on the odometer and has been a part of the present owner’ portfolio for almost 10 years, being stored in a humidity-controlled facility during that time   This is an excellent and very rare example of early-50’s British vehicles and would be a great vehicle to build a collection around or a fine addition to one’s existing collection. Given their limited production numbers and the fact these vehicles tend to remain in long-term ownership it is rather uncommon to find them offered for sale.

NOTICE

Because of the number of vehicles we represent we cannot drive every vehicle for long distances.  These vehicles have been part of static displays for long periods of time, in some cases for decades, and are subject to the flaws and imperfections consistent with that.  While we do our best to disclose all issues we known about a vehicle in our advertising, these are old cars and something that has always worked in the past might not function properly today.  Please check the requirements of your state regarding the licensing and registration of classic vehicles and make sure the vehicle you are looking at meets those if applicable.  Unless otherwise noted, all vehicles represented by Evergreen Digital Showroom possess a clean (non-branded) title which will be provided the new buyer when purchase funds clear our financial institution.  Virtually all of our vehicles are sold as mileage exempt due to their age.  We do not warranty any vehicle, nor any part of the vehicle including air conditioning systems, brake systems, electrical systems and gauges, fuel systems, accessories or powertrain components.

These are old vehicles and it is very common for them to require certain maintenance and upkeep for them to be operational.  In many cases issues with leaks may develop when being driven after a long period of not being used.  This is common, as classic cars at some point will leak fluids.  For this reason, we do not encourage buyers to attempt driving their purchase home as we cannot guarantee functional reliability of these vehicles.  We strongly encourage prospective buyers to be sure they are comfortable with these issues before purchasing a classic car.

Descriptions of vehicles represented by Evergreen Digital Showroom are intended to be informational in nature and do not in any way constitute any sort of warranty, expressed or implied.   Again, these vehicles are presented “as-is, where-is” without guarantee or warranty.  Vehicles manufactured prior to 1981 will likely not be included in the databases of companies such as CarFax and AutoCheck that provide vehicle history information to consumers.   If you have specific questions regarding a vehicle we urge you to contact us at 417-532-8000.
