Ducati's beautiful 750 V-twin engine was conceived by Fabio
Taglioni in the Spring of 1970. First displayed as a prototype
motorcycle at the Milan Show in November 1970, and again with
further development on the Vic Camp stand at the London Motorcycle
Show at Olympia in January 1971. A 1971 pre-production run of just
eighty-two motorcycles out of a proposed one-hundred 750 GT's
commenced in July 1971, with series production of the homologated
version scheduled for 1972.
Shortly after the 1972 Imola 200, Cycle editor Phil Schilling
evaluated an early pre-production 750 GT, commenting "What really
astounded us about the Ducati was its incredible smoothness. This
bike was a revelation."
Regular production of the 750 models commenced in 1972 with a total
of 519 motorcycles built for the model year. The European market
1972 Ducati 750 GT presented here features the early production
metal flake impregnated fiberglass tank and side covers, and a
black painted frame, as opposed to the pre-production models silver
painted frame.
This Ducati is the recipient of an exacting professional
restoration to concours standards by renowned Ducati specialist
Chris Martin at Austin Vintage Cycle. Martin was careful to
maintain the bikes originality, while spending countless hours
rebuilding Taglioni's exquisite engine ensuring that the bike would
be ready to perform on command. Every aspect of the bike is second
to none, fastidiously restored to ensure that all its details are
correct and would find itself right at home on the lawn of any
premiere motorcycle show. The only deviations from stock are a
hidden electronic ignition system, and replacement of the original
notoriously flawed fuse box with a modern unit located under the
seat in the original items location. In 2019 the previous owner
took the bike for its maiden ride on the Quail Ride, an exclusive
motorcycle-only tour in Monterey/Carmel highlands.
Since arriving at Canepa, the motorcycle has been treated to a
concours-level show detail, and currently presents itself as
possibly the finest example of an early Ducati 750 GT available for
sale in the world today.
