Vehicle Description
Immaculately maintained and rarely driven, this sweet GTO wraps a
hot LS1/6-speed drivetrain in the comfort of a large, well-equipped
coupe. And, as one of only 271 6-speed GTOs finished in
2004-exclusive Barbados Blue Metallic, it's as attractive as it is
quick!
A MINDSET FROM 1964, AN ICON FROM 2004
There certainly was a lot of ballyhoo about the fifth-generation
GTO's relatively sedate appearance upon the car's big debut. But
those critics, likely the same folks who belittled the then new
4-door Dodge Charger, we're simply missing the point. The 2004 GTO
took cues directly from the mighty goats of the early 1960s. Back
when subtlety and simplicity were valued over decals and ego, and
when designers and engineers consistently colored new standards for
American performance with familiar traits from Old World brands. It
just so happened that mindset perfectly aligned with Pontiac's new
goal of being General Motors' premier import fighter. And, in fact,
the phrase 'If anyone builds a traditional muscle car, it'll be
Chevrolet' was a mantra that allegedly wafted through GM's
Renaissance Center quite regularly back in those days. When
considered in that light - the manner in which it was intended -
it's hard to argue that The General didn't absolutely nail every
aspect of Pontiac's newest performance icon. Enthusiasts received a
sophisticated sports coupe that stacked stylish, content-rich
aesthetics on all-American athletics that could run with the best
sports cars in the world!
As you can tell from our high-resolution photography, this 431-mile
GTO is a virtually untouched garage queen that is showroom-perfect
in almost every way. Residing in the care of one passionate
gearhead since new, the car is 100% straight, with no history of
accidents or damage of any kind. Stored in a climate-controlled
garage since leaving the dealership, 2004-exclusive Barbados Blue
Metallic 2-stage wears fresh ceramic coating to provide years of
mirror-like reflections. Everything, from the car's flat hood and
solid rear bumper to its factory glass and crystal-clear
headlights, presents a crisp, weather-free appearance. And overall,
this Pontiac is a clean, lust-worthy collectible that looks great
idling across the show field OR hammering down the highway!
CORVETTE WHAT?
Under the scoop-free bonnet, a Gen III LS1 V8 combines a sturdy
aluminum block with lightweight aluminum heads, coil-near-plug
ignition and aluminum flat-top pistons to twist a solid 350
horsepower into 365 lb./ft. of Adelaide-painting torque. That Ozzie
artistry is applied by a tried and true Tremec T56 6-speed, which
inspires a sturdy Dana 44 pumpkin that's finished with a
limited-slip differential and 3.46 gears. Everything rolls on a
fully independent suspension that's led by variable-ratio power
rack-and-pinion steering. Braking is provided by a quartet of
power-assisted calipers, which utilize standard anti-lock
technology to squeeze a quartet of vented rotors. Factory true-dual
exhaust, tuned in accordance with 1960s GTOs, pushes spent gases
through an H-shaped crossover, wide mufflers and polished stainless
tips. And at the corners, chromed Niche wheels twist 245/40ZR18
Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs.
TASTEFUL IS AS TASTEFUL DOES
Inside this GTO, bolstered buckets slide eight electronic
adjustments opposite a French-stitched steering wheel that laps a
tilting and telescoping column. The instrument panel is a
body-matched layout that positions a small Driver Information
Center, a large tachometer and a sweeping speedometer beside a
10-speaker Blaupunkt sound system. Between the seats, a
French-stitched shifter rides a stylish console that's finished
with small power window switches. All that content is framed in
stainless sills, clean floor mats and metal foot pedals. And
naturally, all the luxuries you'd expect in a modern car are
present and accounted for, including Cruise Control, power mirrors,
power door locks and programmable keyless entry.
There's little doubt that this impressive GTO is one of the
fastest, best-handling and most enjoyable muscle cars of all time.
Encapsulating the renewed spirit of the Pontiac brand in a world
class sports coupe, it's the perfect fit for any collector who
loves showroom-fresh speed. Buy the car and stash it away for a few
decades... Or take it out and enjoy every second of one of the best
eras of automotive performance!
