Vehicle Description
1980 Mercedes Benz 280SE
The W108 a line of Mercedes-Benz automobiles introduced in 1965
included the straight 6 M126 Engine, and a double stacked bumper
configuration. Like all Mercedes-Benz cars produced, it was like
driving a German Panzer. Not unlike a double hull ship, these cars
were built to last.
Lasting until the present in very good condition, this W126 280SE
is mostly original equipment. Throughout its history, it has some
rebuilt parts, but has stayed with the original configuration with
options and styling. A true rust-free example, the underside of the
car is as nice than the topside. Also, some prominence this car was
once in the ownership of Barbara Streisand. We have the
documentation from Christies. Lastly one of only 30 to have made it
here to the US in gas format in lieu of diesel which were on all
the remaining SE's
Exterior
Still housing its original sheet metal, this Anthracite Gray
metallic coated beauty is totally rust free and shining brightly.
Dual stacked chrome bumpers in front and in the rear show some of
the redundancy Mercedes is famous for. Bejeweling the front is a
chromed floating radiator grille, topped by the essential tri
pointed star. This is chaperoned on either side by a square fog
light, as well as a horizontal flanking of dual headlights, shown
in the American version (round duals). All brightwork is intact and
shining as well. Period Mercedes wheels matching the car are on all
4 wheels, and under 100 mile usage tires are mounted on the outside
of the wheels. Design for the period shows nicely narrowed profile
trunk and hood areas of the bodywork.
Interior
Original black leather hides cover dual front buckets, as well as
arm rests, and rear seats. The interior seats are blemish free and
very clean, almost like new. Gray and tan pebbled loop carpeting
covers the floor in stain free style, and stretches from door to
door, which has leather covered panels. A wood dash with a swooping
instrument panel and gauge cluster is fronted by an original
steering wheel. Plenty of wood applique is on the front of the
dash, and top of the console, and it breaks up the black very
tastefully. This is all very clean and well maintained and the air
conditioning has been converted to R134.
Drivetrain
The Mercedes-Benz W116 engine is a straight-six Otto cycle engine
with reliable fuel injection. The engine displaced 168 cubic
inches, and develops 142 BHP, at a maximum engine speed of 5800
RPM, all with a 9.0:1 compression ratio. Bolted to the back is a
3-speed automatic transmission.
Undercarriage
Presenting with an overall gray patina, little surface rust can be
found. Mechanicals are all working well, and structure is sound.
4-wheel disc brakes, and A arm suspension with coil springs
upfront, and a swing axle with coil springs on the rear.
Drive-Ability
Started quickly and was an easy driver with great sedan handling,
good acceleration, and a smooth cruiser on the highway. All well
restored and clean presentation.
Provenance may add value, it may not, but the beauty is still in
this car Barbara or not, it is a beautiful example, well restored
with metal surfaces well attended to, mechanicals gone over, and
the interior remains very clean and original. A mere 64,012
original miles. Memories...
