Vehicle Description
1969 Dodge Super Bee
The origin of the name, "Super Bee", has its basis in the "B" Body
designation pertinent to Chrysler's mid-sized cars, including the
Road Runner and Charger. Plymouth's Road Runner sales were enough
to have Dodge Division General Manager, Robert McCurry, request a
similar model from the Dodge Styling office. Senior designer,
Harvey J. Winn, won a "contest" with the name "Super Bee" and a new
logo design based on the Dodge "Scat Pack" Bee medallion.
For consignment a 2-owner muscle car, decked out with a code K3
respray, and tweed interior. Throw in a 440 with a 6-pack, some
wide tires on the back, and you will be ready to give many a
competitor a run for their pink-slip.
Exterior
Navajo Copper Metallic, a 1973 color offering, now covers this
straight steel with well minded gaps car. With its scooped hood,
thin grille wrapped in chrome trim, and wheeled bee badge this car
is looking great. Paint is excellent, chrome is good and the wrap
around stripe on the trunk is all there to highlight the rear of
the car, which is what most people will be seeing during their
race. 15-inch polished Weld wheels wrapped in the rear with wide
31x16.5x15 rubber, and in front with smaller 215/70R15's it has a
punishing stance.
Interior
This fabulously clean car does not disappoint on the interior with
burlap style tweed which is custom molded and surrounds the door
handle, pull, and window crank all looking excellent. Turning to
the interior there is the same high standard of restoration here
with the burlap tweed cloth seats (buckets in front and a bench in
the rear) and nary a mark on the cloth. Dark brown plastic seat
back covers, and bolster pans show slight scratches on them, but
add a nice contrasting to the lighter cloth. The dash is original
but has a few extra toggles and gauges added. This would include an
Autometer Sport tachometer, and water volts and oil gauges hanging
just under the center of the padded dash top. Excellent pristine
gold carpet covers the floors and in the center of the hump is a
reverse pattern Hurst shifter with a 3500 stall converter.
Headliner is more tweed and is nice and tight. Even the trunk has
had attention paid to it with an original checked vinyl liner,
clean original spare and a move of the battery to the trunk...all
well done!
Drivetrain
Underneath the fully removable hood we are greeted by 440 cubes
built by Tom Hemphill who increased compression to 9.5, installed a
custom ground cam, hydraulic lifters, an MSD 6AL ignition, Brodix
aluminum heads, and Kromer ceramic custom headers. On top fossils
and O2 are fed by a 6-pack setup. An A727 Torqueflite 3-speed
automatic hustles power back to a Dana 60 4.10 posi rear, and of
course all this frustration is taken out on those big 31x16.5x15
Hoosiers.
Undercarriage
Black, bold and beautiful under here with no rust, straight steel
and clean, clean, clean. Super stock leaf springs keep that wide
rubber on the ground and torsion bar suspension is up front. All
new wiring last winter went into this car and you can see some of
it snaking underneath. Also is a big 2-1/2 inch exhaust.
Drive-Ability
Our muscle car expert did the test drive on this one, and I could
hear him from the confines of my office as he made his way around
our Classic Auto Mall test area. This car lit right up, has a
premium exhaust sound, and drives great, has smooth power and
handles well despite the large to small tire ratio made mostly for
straight line driving.
To sum it up EXCELLENT! Meticulous build, custom 440 engine, custom
interior and stunning paint, it will not get any more
SUPER...BEE-u-tee-full!
