Vehicle Description
1959 was the first year for the Chevrolet El Camino. Chevrolet took
two years to respond to the Ford Ranchero, and they must have
gotten it right because the El Camino outsold its Ford rival by 50%
in 1959. (About 22,000 El Caminos to 14,000 Rancheros) The
flamboyant styling for '59 makes a perfect platform for a custom,
and that's what we have here. The frame-off restoration left most
of the original character intact, though, especially the 348 cubic
inch Turbo Thrust W-head engine with three deuces -- the top option
that year. The 348 sired the legendary 409, and this one has a mild
409 cam for a little power boost and a little hot rod attitude in
the idle. A great custom has to have the right paint, and this one
sports a marvelous look in nothing less than Lamborghini orange,
which even coats the super smooth bed. A lowered, nose-down stance
is achieved with a Smart Ride air suspension system with QA1
Motorsports adjustable aluminum shocks. Five-spoke chrome aluminum
wheels on Nitto radials nail down the retro/modern look. As pretty
as it is, this Camino is supremely driveable with all that big
block power and a Lokar shifted 700R4 automatic. Plus, Wilwood Pro
Series vented disc brakes with 12-inch rotors front and rear bring
the braking system right up to modern performance standards. A
rugged Ford 9-inch rear gets the power to the wheels via just-right
3.56 gears. Modern upgrades to the interior add functionality while
again respecting the vehicle's heritage. Whiteface gauges by
Classic Instruments are located in the stock dash, and the Vintage
Air air conditioning cleverly utilizes the car's original controls.
Haywire 21 Fuse Deluxe wiring makes everything dependable and safe,
and allows some beefy components from JL Audio to be wired in. A
very attractive copper colored bench seat highlights the elegantly
understated interior. Whether you call it a pickup, a car, or an
SUV, this 1959 Chevrolet El Camino is a winner.
