For Sale: 1951 Mercury Lead Sled in Troy, Michigan

Vehicle Description

MECHANICALS: 1951 Mercury Custom 2 Door Leadsled, powered by a completely detailed and chromed Ford 302 Hi-Performance V8 and a smooth shifting Ford C5 3 speed automatic transmission, fueled by a Holley 650 4 barrel carburetor, Cadillac air filter and electric fuel pump. Rear end is a 2:60 ratio, great for cruising, front end is Mercury. Coil springs in the front and leaf springs with steel blocks in the rear. Monroe heavy duty shocks in front and rear. It has power steering and manual brakes with an old school dual exhaust with quad sparked gasoline flame throwers ignited by (4) exhaust mounted spark plugs and Model T coils.  An electric fan with 2700 CFM power cools the 4 core copper radiator with polished brass top tank. Electrical system is a modern Ron Francis WireWorks 12 Volt harness and fuse box with mini-fuses. Car also has a "Priority Start System" installed on the battery so you will always have enough power to start the car, even if you've left the headlights or the neons on at a show. Electrical power is supplied by a 100  amp alternator with low speed 650 RPM cut-in and (for full electric power at idling speeds), a trunk mounted high CCA 12 volt battery. INTERIOR FEATURES: Cadillac power front leather bench seat with center divider and safety belts with rollups. Interior is in Ford parchment (white/beige) with purple piping and has a full headliner. Rear area has a custom tonneau cover which allows for storage and a clean 2 seater look. I have a complete '66 T-Bird wrap around opera style back seat with all trim and rear deck upholstered and painted to match, separate and ready to install, included with car. The car is fully carpeted in black loop pile carpet with "show and go" front floor mats. The dashboard and door trim surfaces are air brushed in purple and black. Dash has purple/white laminated tear drop knobs on all features. Also, all gauges are included and functional (temperature/oil pressure/voltage/fuel/vacuum and combination speedometer/tachometer), in antique beige Autometer products. It also has a remote controlled 4 speaker  stereo CD player mounted thru glove box, with CB unit right below it. The CB unit uses the drive in movie speaker and has a coiled cord microphone and a detachable rear antenna (at the license plate) for use when traveling distances. The smooth shifting Ford C5 3 speed automatic transmission is controlled by an old school tall floor shifter with matching laminated tear drop handle. The car also comes complete with an interior mounted Kidde fire extinguisher and first aid kit. When backing the car up, there is a manually activated switch which turns on a recorded message which plays thru an external speaker. It warns anyone behind the car "Attention: This Vehicle is Backing Up" and repeats automatically until turned off. This is a nice safety feature for chopped Lead-sleds. The tilt steering wheel is from a '67 Impala and matches the interior, complete with Marilyn Monroe suicide knob. EXTERIOR FEATURES: Dark Grape Metallic base/clear paint is like glass and gorgeous on a very straight no rust steel body. The roof has been chopped 5 1/2" and offers great headroom inside. Body is dropped and channeled for a sleek looking ride which is a definite head turner. Headlights are frenched in 5 1/2". They shine like two spotlights down the road at night. The quad rear mounted antennas are also frenched with one antenna power operated from dash board. The door handles and trunk handle are shaved and operated by key fob with poppers for the doors and trunk has foot controlled popper. Tailight lenses are devil face "El Diablo" with blue dot eyes. Body is steel with rounding, decking and nosing in key areas. Front grill and turn signals are from a '53  Desoto. Hubcaps are Dodge Lancers . The rear wheels are covered by removable original NOS '51 Mercury steel skirts painted to match with new rubber seals, The car has true purple NEON light tubes in the grill area, wheel wells, trunk and interior, controlled from dash. Also installed are old school Mercury insignia halogen working spotlights with ivory handles by Unity (REAL,NOT DUMMIES). In the trunk is a matching air brushed removable storage trunk which I use to hold my cleaning materials. High mounted brake lights are installed in the interior rear, visible thru tinted rear window. Full glass front windshield with variable speed wipers. Old school eyebrow air vent/scoops cutout in hood each side. All vehicle manuals and wiring schematics are included and several additional items go with the car which can be discussed when purchased.  Also included with the car is a 12" x 17" photo album with historical data and over 100 photographs of the car since the first owner in it's custom form. The photographs also show the car when it was body-worked, chopped, primed and painted, throwing flames and more. I have attached a video so you can hear the Smithy mufflers rumble as well as the turbine like front cooling fan. Runs and looks great. Car was in the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Museum in 96-97 (Documented) before it received it's current update.. Serious buyers can email any detailed questions in the "message seller" block and I will answer them. One of the only Mercury vehicles you'll find that is all Ford powered. One  photograph shows the Mercury winning it's class at the Ford World Headquarters show in Dearborn, Michigan, held every year, where only Ford powered vehicles are allowed.  The car is designed and built, painted and upholstered very tastefully, classy yet old school. No mechanical issues or leaks. The last several photos are recent 2020 additions. Two cars have become too much for me at my age so we are only keeping our Mustang convertible. The Merc needs a new home.
