illustrated parts catalog Ever thought about owning a piece of war
history? This Land Rover is said to have seen action during the
Falklands War between the United Kingdom and Argentina during the
early 1980s. After peace was declared, the truck was exported to
the United States, where it spent seven years in a Georgia barn.
There, it was refinished in olive green with a tan canvas top under
a previous owner. These amazing off-roaders were called
?lightweights? because the whole idea was for Land Rover to modify
its existing 88-inch wheelbase Series IIA into something
significantly lighter that could be transported by the military by
helicopter while also significantly smaller so that it could fit
into an airplane or on a pallet. The helicopter meant to lift the
Land Rover, according to a number of websites devoted to Land Rover
history including the Military Lightweight Club, was the Westland
Wessex, which had a payload rating of only 2,500 pounds. And the
airplane meant to fit two Land Rover Lightweights side-by-side was
the Argosy. The paint and trim are in good, original order as is a
tan canvas top with plastic windows. There are black steel bumpers,
including a pintle hitch in back and diamond-plate trim has been
added to the tops of the front fenders. The passenger side wiper is
missing but the engine bay is tidy and the bodywork is solid and
straight. The seller said he replaced the headlights and
windshield, glazing and seal. This truck rolls on Michelin LTX
tire, size 225/75R16 at all four corners plus a matching spare tire
on the hood. Each tire is mounted to a body-colored steel wheel.
The tires are in very good order while the wheels are in good,
original order. Under the hood, is a carbureted 2.25L four-cylinder
engine. It has a custom exhaust installed from the header back and
includes a Magnaflow muffler. The motor is mated to a four-speed
manual transmission with synchromesh in second through fourth gears
and a two-speed transfer case. A fluid and filter change were done
in July 2019. The Series III Lightweight kept the metal instrument
panel from the earlier Series IIa. This right-hand drive example
has two black front seats upholstered in vinyl that are in great
condition, with three-point seat belts divided by an olive-green
center console. In the rear are folding jump seats. The flooring is
in good, original order. A three-spoke steering wheel fronts a set
of Jaeger gauges but the fuel, oil and temperature gauges and horn
are inoperable, plus defroster vents and hazard flashers. Those
