Introduced in 1999, the Ferrari 360 ushered in several new innovations as the company headed into the 21st century. A successor to the F355, the 360 was a totally new vehicle from top to bottom and hinted at the technology changes that would be seen in the future.
The 360 was available for the 1999 and 2000 model years only as a coupe and was named the Modena in honor of the Italian city that was the birthplace of company founder Enzo Ferrari. The 360 Spider was introduced at the 2000 Geneva Motor Show and was available from the 2001 through 2004 model years, with the F430 replacing the 360 models in 2005.
The 360’s rounded body design by Pinninfarina was a complete deviation from the sharp angles and flip-up headlights Ferraris had become known for in the prior models of the late 1980’s and 1990’s. The venerable Ferrari V8 was visible through a clear cover, another distinctive change for the marque and numerous unseen changes were made to strengthen the all-new body design. The 360 also benefitted from Ferrari’s partnership with Alcoa, resulting in a new aluminum space frame that was forty percent stiffer than the F355’s steel frame but weighed twenty eight percent less.
Displacement for the mid-mounted V8 was increased from the F335’s 3.5L to 3.6L and was rated at 395 horsepower. The electrohydraulic 6 speed manual transmission, introduced in the later years of the F355, and the gated 6 speed manual transmission were both available in the 360. With a curb weight of 3,424 pounds for the Spider, the vehicle was able to post a 0-60 MPH time of just under 3.5 seconds.
Raising or lowering the top on the 360 Spider has been described by engineers as “a two-stage, 20-second mechanical symphony”, a testament to the level of engineering involved. When lowered the top is completely enclosed in a compartment located immediately in front of the motor, adding to the sleek body lines and giving a roadster-like appearance.
Appointed in Grigio (silver) Alloy with tan interior and blue convertible top, this 2003 Ferrari 360 Spider is an excellent example of the 2,389 models manufactured for the U.S. market over the four-year production run. With only 8,577 miles on the odometer since new, this features the F1 paddle-shifted transmission and is one of the lowest mileage 360 Spiders currently available in the country. The car has been driven recently by the present owner and stored in a humidity-controlled environment.
