Vehicle Description
This 1974 Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC is the classic Mercedes SL premium
look in a rarer classic coupe body. And not only is this an
affordable V8 classic, but also it has an interesting story.
Silver always looks great on a European classic. In fact, you might
even notice that this one has the upgraded European flush
headlights. It gives this coupe a distinct first impression. We
won't promote this example as highest degree paint and body, but
this is being offered for the kind of price that lets you enjoy a
classic Mercedes today, and leave room in the budget if you feel
like a restoration. In general, we're a big fan of the SLC. It has
same look of the R107 Mercedes SL convertible that defined premium
motoring for an entire era. But because it was in production for
half the time, you get added rarity with the distinctive coupe
body. While all that already make this desirable, the consignor
states this Mercedes once belonged to Bruce Beresford, director of
Driving Miss Daisy.
The blue interior is a nice complement color to the silver
exterior. These SLCs are unique that the offer the back seat that
you don't get in the SL (perfect for Driving Miss Daisy.) This was
built for keeping you comfortable behind the wheel, and so you have
features, like cruise control, power locks, and a sunroof. There's
even an upgraded AM/FM/CD stereo with USB input to power your
phone.
The 450 SLC carried one of Mercedes-Benz's largest engines during
its era, and so when you pop the hood, the engine bay looks like
it's overflowing with V8 power. The 4.5-liter SOHC motor with Bosch
fuel injection is legendary for its smoothness and torquey
attitude. This is a sports car for cruising, and Mercedes was a bit
more concerned with engine refinement than all-out acceleration. So
while they did build the three-speed automatic transmission with a
gated shifter for better choosing your gear, it's best to let the
automatic gearbox shift for itself. On the road, this has nice
grand touring feel thanks to the coupe's longer wheelbase and fully
independent suspension. This was topped off with power steering and
four-wheel disc brakes for the best all-around control. Add in new
Uniroyal Tiger Paw tires on the iconic baroque alloy wheels, and
this is ready for cruising.
