Vehicle Description
1978 Chevrolet Corvette 25th Anniversary
To mark the Corvettes 25th Anniversary, some notable improvements
were made. 1978 Corvettes had a new fastback roofline and rear
window. These changes enhanced the Corvette's sleek silhouette. The
new and improved rear window not only allows for a cleaner styling
profile; it also improves visibility for the driver and adds extra
luggage space. Inside, there is also room for storage of the
removable roof panels. A larger, plastic-lined fuel tank is also a
new addition to the '78 Vette. Capacity has been boosted from 17 to
24 gallons. The instrument panel has also been restyled and
features face-mounted, round, easy to read instruments.
Replacing the original CMR coded engine is an identical but not
numbers matching 350ci L82 V8. It is still a silver anniversary L82
car which holds merit. Good condition would describe this Corvette
so if interested read on!
Exterior
Two tone Silver metallic covers the fiberglass body and makes its
transition from light to dark at the car's midline. Fiberglass
panels are in place but can be easily removed on the "T" top, which
is tight with no leaking. A large curved greenhouse rear window is
just a gas! (tongue in cheek). Round rear integrated crash bumpers,
and the front quarter Corvette cove, now reduced to just an air dam
are noted. Aluminum wheels, sport mirrors, and a power antenna are
options added on to this car at its birth. 15-inch standard
Corvette wheels are on all 4 corners.
Interior
Tall backed black leather buckets sit comfortably in the cockpit.
Leather shows use, in the form of creases and patina with but no
serious damage. A center console houses the handbrake, as well as
the shift lever and climate controls and has a wood walnut grained
applique and side textured popcorn style tactile carpet. Making its
way up to the dash an aftermarket Panasonic AM/FM Cassette is
neatly installed, along with a cluster of round gauges make
themselves available to show the driver of any problems. A square
design dash has the speedometer, tachometer, as well as a veritable
Christmas tree of warning lights. A tilt/telescoping steering wheel
column has been added to the options list. Power windows are there
for your convenience as well. Flooring is covered with black
carpet, and the rear storage area has faded black carpet lining and
a new deck carpeted mat also in black.
Drivetrain
A 350ci L82 V8 with a 4-barrel carburetor and a 4-speed manual
transmission can be seen with the flip of the hood. Noted are
ribbed valve covers, a chromed air cleaner lid, and an otherwise
mostly original engine bay.
Undercarriage
With slight surface rust and mostly black patina metal, the
underside is structurally sound. 4-wheel power disc brakes are
seen, as well as a new exhaust from the gas tank rearward. C3
suspension is all around and all sound and functioning well. Noted
are some snazzy stainless brake calipers which last a good long
time.
Drive-Ability
With an abundance of Corvettes here at Classic Auto Mall sometimes
it is hard to tell them apart. This one sets itself from the others
due to the more powerful engine, and it started quickly and ran
great. Handling was on rails, and very nimble, seats were
comfortable, and all was working on the dash.
With the design changes in the 1978 year, this car is a good
example of a mostly original car. Garaged, and well maintained,
with good exterior paint and fiberglass, a fiberglass paneled "T"
top. With the L82 engine we are ready to pop the cork in
celebration of the 25 Anniversary... Congrats!! You could be the
new owner.
