Vehicle Description
1950 Cushman Step-Through
The Cushman Scooter Company was started in 1903 in Lincoln,
Nebraska, by Everett and Clinton Cushman. The company incorporated
as Cushman Motor Works in 1913. Cushman began production of their
four-stroke Husky engine in 1922. Cushman produced engines for farm
equipment, pumps, lawn mowers, and boats. Cushman began making
Auto-Glide scooters in 1936 as a means to increase the sale of
Husky engines during the Great Depression. Cushman scooters were
widely used by the United States Armed Forces in World War II and
as an alternative to automobiles before and after the war.
For consignment a vintage Step-Through Model 60 series (denoted by
the tapered outward turtle back cowling). Clean with a few
scratches and chips off of the paint, but a good runner, smooth
2-speed shifter, and a hoot to take for a ride. All in its 1950's
restored glory.
Exterior
Presenting in glorious red, this tapered cowl model 60 is in good
condition paint wise. A few areas of scratch off, and chipping, in
particular on the lower fenders on the rear, but otherwise very
nicely preserved. Chromed coil sprung suspension in the front, and
coli sprung suspension in the rear are seen. Wide white 4.75 x 7.75
tires are attached to the front and rear.
Interior
A large square tan vinyl seat with red piping makes it feel like
you're got something significant between your legs. A black rubber
footrest and area underneath a small front cowl, will keep your
feet dry if you get caught out in a shower. The rear "trunk" lifts
up to reveal the barrel style gas tank, and a small storage area at
the rear of the scooter. Handlebars are ergonomically placed with a
twist throttle and outboard pedals for braking and clutch.
Drivetrain
The 290cc engine is tucked within the turtleback cowling and has a
2-speed manual transmission attached. This engine is a Cushman
Husky Model 17 M8-5 with a bore of 2 7/8" and a stroke 2 3/4". A
1-barrel carburetor is attached and provides plenty of pep for the
engine.
Undercarriage
Strong steel horizontal girders welded to an I beam style frame, is
sturdy, rust free, and houses the underpinnings of the scooter.
