The 911E was designed to be the most comfortable of the 911 models; many were lavishly appointed with a variety of factory options. Conceived to fit in between the 911T and the 911S, the E designation stood for einspritzung, German for "injection," noting mechanical fuel injection. For 1973 Porsche produced just 1,055 examples of the 911E Targa.
The 1973 Porsche 911E featured here is finished in the appropriate color combination of Signal Yellow over a light tan interior with black and brown houndstooth inserts. This particular example is number 1,040 out of a 1,055 911E Targa’s assembled for 1973. 1973 was the final year for the classic “long hood” 911 and the 911E model, which makes this example one of the last 20 ever built! Further provenance comes in the form of its previous owner – acclaimed Hollywood director, producer and writer Frank Darabont. A respected Porsche collector and enthusiast, some of Mr. Darabont’s most celebrated work includes directing Academy Award nominated films The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption. An excellent variety of documentation is included with the sale of this 911E Targa including the owner’s manual, recent invoices from the marque specialists at Classic Porsche Restoration (CPR), registration receipts in Frank Darabont’s name as well as the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity which verifies that the numbers matching 2.4 liter engine and 5-speed gearbox are still in place. With excellent ownership and production number provenance, this final production year 911E will certainly bring many years of enjoyment to its future caretaker. We are proud to offer this 1973 Porsche 911E Targa to the most astute collector, investor or enthusiast who appreciates the legacy of the “long hood” Porsche 911.
