platform that kept on giving throughout the 1980s. It spawned
multiple variants, including the company?s G platform which
underpinned the Dodge Daytona in 1987. This example is one of 7,152
Daytona Turbo Z models made in 1987 and was built on May 7, 1987 at
Chrysler?s Fenton, Missouri assembly plant, which was located a
couple of miles from the showroom. This is a one family owned car
with 96,584 original miles and is sold on actual mileage Missouri
title. This car?s custom high quality metallic paint is in overall
excellent condition and has chrome illusion front-end flames on the
nose and hood. The paint looks stunning in the sunlight and the
overall quality is much better than the 1980?s factory Dodge paint.
The boxy is solid and straight, the engine bay is immaculate, the
cargo area is in very good shape, the battery appears new and the
body-colored bumpers fit tightly to the body and echo the rest of
the exterior?s condition. This Daytona is shod with radial tires,
size 225/50R15 and each one is wrapped around American Racing
three-spoke black and silver wheels. The wheels and tires are in
very good order and the car is included with the original factory
wheels and steering wheel. Under the hood is a 2.2L turbocharged,
intercooled four-cylinder engine with multiport fuel injection
(MPI). The engine is linked to a five-speed manual transmission
(code A555) with Getrag gears. Driver convenience features are
lengthy ? air-conditioning but is inoperable, power steering, power
brakes, cruise control, power windows, power locks, power mirrors,
tilt steering column and intermittent wipers. Right wiper and horn
is inop. Inside, the gray cloth interior looks great, particularly
the low-back front buckets and rear seats, carpet and headliner.
The aftermarket steering wheel and rearview mirror add whimsical
touches while the inner door panels and instrument panel echo the
rest of the interior?s theme but the stock steering wheel is
included. There?s even a turbo boost/vacuum gauge. The center
console and floor-mounted shifter are in good, original order. A
factory AM/FM stereo with cassette completes the interior. For
1987, the Daytona was restyled externally and featured pop-up
headlights. New in 1987 was a Shelby Z trim level with an available
Chrysler developed Turbo II intercooled version of the 2.2 L
Chrysler K engine, as well as a heavy-duty A555 transaxle with
Getrag gears. Among the optional equipment included a leather
interior, eight-way power enthusiast driver's seat (with mechanical
thigh and lumbar controls), digital instrument cluster and a
12-button trip computer (with instant fuel ratings as well as trip
averages and estimated travel times). Competition to this Dodge in
1987 included Buick Skyhawk Turbo Coupe, Chevrolet?s Camaro Z-28,
Ford?s Mustang GT, Honda?s Prelude Si, Isuzu?s Impulse Turbo,
Mazda?s RX-7, Mercury?s Capri RS, Merkur?s XR4Ti, Mitsubishi?s
Starion ESI-R, Nissan?s 240SX, Nissan?s 300ZX 2+2, Pontiac?s
Firebird Trans Am and Sunbird GT Turbo and Toyota?s Supra Turbo.
Dodge marketed the Daytona as a front-wheel drive alternative to
such rear-wheel drive stalwarts as the Camaro, Mustang and
Firebird, touting its turbocharged four-cylinder as a better
alternative to their larger V-8 motors while delivering more miles
per gallon yet providing almost as much power in a lighter package.
