Vehicle Description
1960 Cadillac Coupe DeVille
Well now you may think I'm foolish
For the foolish things I do
You may wonder how come I love you
When you get on my nerves like you do
Well baby you know you bug me
There ain't no secret 'bout that
Well come on over here and hug me
Baby I'll spill the facts
Well honey it ain't your money
'Cause baby I got plenty of that
I love you for your pink Cadillac.
For consignment the ultimate status symbol of the dawn of the 60's
in the form of a Cadillac Coupe DeVille. Literally meaning "of the
town" this long and luxurious land yacht complete with massive
fins, big steel slab sides, is a real cruiser, and way over what
you think is status quo.
Exterior
An older respray in Pelham Blue metallic covers the massive steel
panels that are minding their gaps. In full disclosure, some water
staining, possibly from wet contact with the car cover for an
extended period of time, show mostly on the flat surfaces (hood,
roof, fenders, trunk). One has to look just in the right light to
see it, but it is there. Being a survivor car, it retains much of
its originality. A shout to the rear of this car with its rocket
ship design in the form of dual vertical taillights inserted into
the bumper resembling thrusters, and those nifty brake lights
inserted into the V shaped fins. Did you know those fins actually
make the car go faster? Paint is still shiny, and the chrome is
good. The grille is complete with tiny bullets within the egg crate
ultra-wide whites peek out from the fender skirts on the rear, and
up front lead the way around any corner.
Interior
With all power options working excepting the original radio, you
are in wealthy man's territory in the interior of this car. The
spacious benches covered in broadcloth in the centers and
surrounded by leather bolsters all electric, all working. The door
panels are an exercise in 60's design with various textures
including an aluminum strip with concentric circles etched in
aluminum, cloth in two tone square, gray leather uppers, and lower
carpet banding. Nice shiny handles and knobs here too. The wrap
around dash also is an exercise in early 60's design with a cluster
of power switches for windows and mirrors housed in the curve,
instrument cluster in the center, and a long band of horizontal
chromed bands to add accent. Round bezel clock, and A/C vents are
located throughout. Gray carpet in good condition covers the
floors, and a tight original headliner hangs above.
Drivetrain
The standard Cadillac 390ci V8 rebuilt 10 years ago sits in an
unrestored but very clean engine bay. On top is a Rochester single
4-barrel carburetor, and a 4-speed Hydramatic automatic
transmission is on the back of the 390. 3.21 gears which is the
standard ratio on Caddy's with A/C, which this one has.
Undercarriage
For a survivor the undercarriage has a nice patina and no surface
rust. 4-wheel power drum brakes, and cushy independent coil spring
and coil spring suspension make for a cloud like ride.
Drive-Ability
Behind this wheel you as the driver are large and in charge, in
this comfy well-designed interior. A turn of the key and she fires
right up and has a smooth idle. Shifting is solid with no lag, and
acceleration is smooth. A/C blows cold, and as mentioned the radio
does not work, and we found the wipers to be in-op as well. Overall
a very smooth ride as with most pieces of Detroit iron this
large.
All original, mostly working, comfortable clean example of a
3-owner car, 2 of them from the same family (grandfather /
grandson). A rebuilt engine at the time of the restoration/respray
10cyears ago, and otherwise all original. Truly driveway jewelry to
be sure to turn heads and attract attention in your neighborhood.
And the fins do make it go faster!
