Vehicle Description
This 1996 Chevrolet Impala SS represents a modern take on a true
classic and it runs and drives great. It's lightly travelled for a
car from its era, and from all appearances, it's seen plenty of
attentive care during its life, combining a still-fresh, terrific
looking exterior and a clean, inviting interior with eager V8 power
under its hood.
It's got quite a storied lineage as its model dates all the way
back to the late '50s, when it would undergo quite a number of
changes in very short order while being transformed into a coveted
fixture on America's boulevards. After being put on a nearly decade
long hiatus, Impalas reemerged in their seventh generation form not
long before this one's arrival, equipped with a reshaped exterior
and a road-hugging stance that was noticeably lower to the ground
than its sedan stablemate the Caprice. Enhanced SS versions like
this one arrived shortly after, offering upgraded power to pair
with the model's considerable spaciousness. The striking teal shade
draped over the exterior of this '96 provides a distinctive look
and still has its nice shine and smooth finish - a comprehensive
detailing would make it stand out even more. A well-aligned
exterior, sharp badging and clean array of chrome ornamentation
provide evidence that this Chevy has spent most of its down time in
a sheltered environment.
Climb inside and you'll see plenty of additional evidence this
Impala has been treated with respect. Its gray leather interior is
still strong, with plush, contoured front buckets that show minimal
wear and sit over matching gray carpet in the same condition. The
center console appears clean and shows very little of the
discoloration that usually comes with more than 20 years of service
and farther forward on the dash area, all the factory gauges,
lights and switches function smoothly. Being a relatively
modern-day muscle car has its decided benefits as far as comfort
and convenience options. This Chevy has its fair share of them,
including power windows and door locks, a tilt wheel, cruise
control, power seats, and an AM/FM/CD player to provide your audio
soundtrack while behind the wheel. Driver and passenger airbags
offer an added measure of safety and the remote door opener is a
welcome feature that was relatively scarce only a few years prior
to this Chevy's arrival. The trunk area is in good order, with a
neatly covered spare on board inside.
Consistent care and relatively light usage have definitely paid
dividends here, as this Chevy runs and drives nicely. Its
electronically fuel injected 5.7 liter V8 springs into action
quickly and pulls with plenty of conviction, amplified by an added
K&N cold air induction system and combining with a smooth
shifting 4-speed automatic transmission whose overdrive gear brings
RPMs way down at highway speeds. Take a peek under the hood and
you'll see a collection of components that still seem plenty fresh
after more than two decades. The Impala's substantial wheelbase
combines with a 4-link rear suspension - the same configuration
featured in a multitude of aftermarket performance projects - to
provide a smooth, agile ride, while power disc brakes at all four
corners bring prompt, fade-resistant stops to the set of 17" stock
Impala SS wheels wrapped with Kumho Ecsta tires. Below, the
undercarriage looks just as solid as you'd expect, given the clean
condition of the rest of the car.
