For Sale at Auction: 1934 Bentley 3-Litre in Monteira,

Vehicle Description

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys' The Sragga Collection event, 20 - 21 September 2019.
Estimate:
€50,000 - €70,000

  • One of only 13 Arnold-bodied 3-Litre Bentleys
  • Retains its original engine and bodywork

Rolls-Royce and Bentley Motors Works' manager at Derby, E W Hives, CH MBE (developer of the Merlin aero engine, who later was named Chairman of Rolls-Royce, Ltd), was tasked to design the all-new Bentley 3-Litre. His personal notes read, '...answer to the moods of the driver...Be driven fast with safety...Tour without fuss and noise...Controls, steering and brakes shall be light to operate and the braking shall be adequate for a fast car...Maximum speed should be 90 mph, 75 mph in third gear...' The result became known as 'the silent sports car'.

Chassis number B119 BL was delivered to its first owner, A Rigg, in August 1934. Still wearing its original charming four-door sports saloon body, it features era-correct British Racing Green paintwork, with a re-trimmed interior in befitting tan leather. The handsome walnut instrument panel is highlighted by the large and legible speedometer and tachometer.

In recent years, as documented sale prices validate, the Derby Bentley has come into great favour by all collectors, not just British car enthusiasts. Few pre-war cars carry more graceful coachwork, nor offer more fun behind the wheel, than the Derby Bentley.

  • Mantm motor e carroaria originais

To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/pg19.
