Many Binders have passed through MotoeXotica Classic Car?s garage
door but this example is one of the last models International made
before it gave up on its light truck lines completely. This Scout
II Traveler 4x4 Midas Edition has the rare swivel front bucket
seats, roof-mounted luggage rack and swivel front bucket seats with
folding armrests. From 1977 to 1980 International Harvester
contracted with Midas Van Conversion Co. of Elkhart, Indiana, to
build special luxury models to be offered through its dealers.
However these vehicles were only offered for a short time, making
them very rare today. The Midas Van Conversions had the typical
custom van touches ? shag carpet, brown plaid highlights, funky
cosmic root beer graphics, overhead digital displays, swivel seats
? applied The Scout line for 1980 had a bright new face, featuring
a new grille flanked by modern rectangular headlamps. Power
steering became standard equipment along with a smaller diameter
steering wheel. Made in October 1979 at International-Harvester?s
Fort Wayne, Indiana factory, this Scout is finished in Sun Yellow
in 2011 with a brown and tan paint striping scheme and a white top.
Its paint and trim are in overall great shape. The Midas Edition
interior is all factory original and will take you back to the days
of plaid and shag. You will be hard pressed to find anything like
this Scout! The Scout?s bodywork is solid and straight, its bumpers
and cargo area are in good, original order. The rear hatch lid is
heavy but opens and closes easily enough. This Scout rolls on
Firestone FR380 white stripe radials, size 235/75R15 at all four
corners. Each tire is mounted to a factory wheel with front locking
hubs. The wheels are in good, original order while the tires are in
very good condition. Under that front-hinged hood is a 345 CID V-8
engine upgraded to a four-barrel carburetor. Backing this motor is
Chrysler?s A727 three-speed automatic transmission and a two-speed
transfer case. This Binder has a 3.31:1 rear end. Four-wheel drive
power is routed through Dana 44 front and rear axles. Driver
convenience features includes working vintage air-conditioning,
power steering and power brakes, discs in front. Inside, it has
those previously mentioned front bucket plaid Midas seats that
swivel with fold-down armrests. The front and rear seats are
upholstered in a brown plaid pattern that is in very good, original
condition, as is the matching brown carpet and brown headliner. The
headliner comes with reading lights for the rear passengers and
separate overhead cargo lights along with an overhead Digitar
overhead clock/alarm between driver and front passenger The
instrument panel has a full array of gauges but the temp, fuel
speedo/odo are inoperable. While the inner door lines are in good,
original order and a factory AM/FM stereo rounds out the interior.
In 1980, the final year of production for the Scout, the grille was
a very distinctive design, available with black or silver, a
one-piece grille with square headlights, made of ABS plastic. Both
grille color options had imprinted chrome trim around the
headlights and an ?International? name located on the left side.
Starting with late 1974 Scout IIs, disc and power brakes were
standard features. Early 1974 models had disc brakes as a rarely
selected option. A three-speed A727 automatic made by Chrysler was
optional. Competition to this Scout in 1980 included Chevrolet?s
K10 Blazer, Dodge?s Ramcharger, Ford?s Bronco, GMC?s K10 Jimmy,
Jeep?s Cherokee Laredo and Plymouth?s Trailduster. Binder fans and
truck collectors, this one is worth checking out in person. If
