Vehicle Description
Looking fresh and vibrant in its two-tone paint scheme and sporting
a drivetrain that's in top form, this 1982 Datsun 280ZX Turbo would
be a great acquisition for the automotive enthusiast looking for a
true '80s icon that would not only be great for weekend excursions,
but is perfectly suited for more frequent driving, as well.
At first glance, you can see how this Z's appearance contributed
mightily to its almost universal popularity. There's no doubt that
there were plenty of '80s-era cars with styling very much of their
time, but this certainly isn't one of them. Its timeless form looks
just as good today as it did some 37 years ago. Being a 1982, it
received a fairly thorough updating by its manufacturer, adding
noticeably more prominent hood ducts, a remodeled rear roof pillar
and refined taillights. The striking two-tone, blue and silver
paint it now wears really does it justice. Even after so many years
of faithful service, it remains a well-aligned car, with even gaps
surrounding its hood, doors and rear hatch. Take a closer look and
you'll see that the contrasting trim running along its lower
bodyline is nice and level and has an appealing gloss to it. This
280's T-Top configuration is also a great plus, affording the
option of open-air motoring, or protection from the elements with
minimal wind noise when you so choose, and the included panels are
in great shape and seal nicely.
While if you look closely you can find some of the expected signs
of wear on the surfaces of the gray cloth interior, this remains a
very enticing vintage driving environment and there's definitely
plenty to like inside these doors. The cloth bucket seats have held
their shape well and still offer plenty of support and they bracket
a center console that's in surprisingly good condition. The bench
seat in back looks nearly unused. Despite its UV sensitive black
color, the dash area is another strong feature - it shows no
warpage or cracks and houses an instrument panel's worth of clear
factory gauges, all of which are still functioning as intended. The
hatchback configuration of the ZX makes for a surprising amount of
storage space in back and that area looks great here, with clean
carpeting lining the floor. Comfort and convenience features
include power windows, air conditioning that's blowing cold and
strong and an AM/FM/Cassette to provide a period correct audio
experience while you're on the road.
Underneath the hood sits a fuel-injected and turbocharged 2.8-liter
V6 that's mated with a 3-speed automatic transmission, so this car
is a lot of fun to drive but won't leave you dreading stop and go
traffic any more than you already do. The engine sits in a
compartment that remains in entirely stock configuration but has
been well-maintained to keep it free of any grime or discoloration
and both the surrounding wires and hoses appear nice and fresh.
This vintage Datsun offers a very strong experience behind the
wheel, as the engine is running strong and the transmission shifts
very smoothly. Smooth power steering makes for easy navigation,
while power disc brakes at all four corners bring the car to quick,
easy stops. A very charismatic and road-ready representative of its
era, this classic rides on a set of special edition 15" stock
Nissan "Z" rims reserved only for turbos like itself, outfitted
with Cooper Weather-Master tires.
