Chevy Market? Why not turn to one of the other GM divisions from
the mid-1950s? MotoeXotica Classic Cars offers this 1956 Oldsmobile
98 Deluxe Holiday Hardtop Sedan. This wonderful top of the line
example is consigned by a local Oldsmobile collector. Made in
Oldsmobile?s Lansing, Michigan factory (VIN code M), the 98 was
Olds? top-of-the-line model, dating from 1940 when it was a Series
90 model fitted with an eight-cylinder engine. This example is one
of 42,320 Holiday Hardtop sedans made in 1956. Dressed in white
over red, the car?s paint and trim are in overall very good order.
However, there is a dent in the center front bumper, near the hood
release. The swept flank look for 1956, combined with the swept
back wheel wells evoke motion in the styling, even when the car is
motionless. The car?s dual sideview mirrors and a split grille that
looks like it was borrowed from Pontiac. The car?s body is straight
and solid, the engine bay is in good, original order while the
battery looks good. The car?s chrome bumpers fit tightly to the
body and offer a great overall finish. This 98 rolls on older wide
whitewall tires on 15-inch steel wheels topped with factory wheel
covers. The wheel covers and tires are all in good, original order.
Under the hood is Oldsmobile?s 324 CID Rocket V-8 engine, backed by
GM?s Jetaway three-speed automatic transmission and a 3.42:1 rear
end. Driver convenience features include power steering, power
brakes, a power front bench seat and power windows. Inside, the car
has a red and black patterned cloth interior. The car features a
dual oval theme on the dash. The driver?s side oval houses the
speedometer, fuel gauge and warning lights. The bench seats,
carpet, headliner, two-spoke steering wheel, inner door liners and
dashboard are all in good shape though the steering wheel has seen
a lot of use and the vacuum wipers work slowly. Rounding out the
interior is a factory AM radio. Again in 1956, the top of the line
Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight series had an exclusive 126-inch wheelbase,
four inches longer than the Olds 88. Power came from the Rocket V-8
shared with the Super 88. Standard equipment included armrests,
bumper guards, lined trunk, rotary door latches, dual horns,
cigarette lighter, turn signals, rubber floor mats, aluminum door
sill plates, sun visors, front and rear carpeting, foam rubber seat
cushions, courtesy lights, front fender medallions, deck lid
?Ninety-Eight? script, back-up light moldings, electric clock,
Jetaway Hydramatic Drive, padded dash, power steering, windshield
washers and deluxe steering wheel. Upholstery choices were pattern
cloth and leather in a variety of colors and combinations. The
parking brake was now a foot pedal. Competition to this Oldsmobile
in 1956 included Buick?s Roadmaster Riviera Sedan, Cadillac?s
Series 62 Sedan, Chrysler?s Windsor Sedan, DeSoto?s Fireflite Sedan
and Mercury?s Monterey Phaeton. If you?re looking for a car that
needs some work without breaking a budget, this could be your next
set of classic wheels. This Olds 98 is a viable alternative to most
1956 Chevrolets available and it has a larger V-8 engine than any
Chevy came with from the factory. VIN: 569M34175 This car is
currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current
