another Oldsmobile 98 Starfire like this one. Dubbed ?ELI? as a
dual rolling tribute to Oldsmobile and REO founder Ransom Eli Olds
and Harley J. Earl, GM?s original styling wizard and founder of the
company?s Art & Colour studio. The builder of this gorgeous 1957
Oldsmobile Starfire 98 fell in love with the full-size Olds as a
young boy but his passion never subsided and the result is this
1950s-style Street Custom with elements borrowed from all five of
General Motors? contemporaneous makes. Nicknamed ?Eli? after Ransom
Eli Olds, the car also pays tribute to legendary designer Harley
Earl, who oversaw the design used in many of its details, including
the 1951 Pontiac Chieftain hood ornament, the oval fender vents
honoring Buick?s 1950s VentiPorts, the 1959 Cadillac taillights and
the 1959 Chevrolet rear fender antennas. This Starfire 98 is
decorated in PPG Vibrance Money and custom Cream two-stage paint,
with custom LED lighting in the headlights and hood ornament and
fender rockets adding unique highlights. Note the tri-section rear
window treatment. A GM Performance ZZ383 stroker engine supplies
440 horsepower and 430 lbs-ft of torque while disguised as an Olds
Rocket V-8. The engine bay is extremely tidy. The modified Spectre
Performance cold-air intake over a Holley 770 CFM four-barrel
carburetor, March Performance front runner system and custom Borla
through-the-bumper exhaust with five-inch tips, complete the power
equation. A GM 700R4 overdrive transmission and a 3.42:1 rear end
contribute to cruise economy elements. The chassis incorporates all
the components needed to deliver excellent handling and braking. A
Fatman Fabrications front clip contributes rack-and-pinion
steering, Wilwood disc brakes and a four-link rear suspension,
Panhard bar and airbags at all four corners combine with BFG
Silvertown wide whitewall radial tires, size 225/75R15, on painted
deep-dish steelies fitted with classic chrome beauty rings and baby
moon hubcaps. Contrasting the car?s exterior classic vibe, the
custom fabricated brown and cream leather interior has been
modernized while still retaining a few old-school touches. The
seats are from a 2006 Cadillac STS. The dash is completely shaved
and padded while keeping the Olds? signature oval instrument bezel,
now fitted with a Speedhut GPS-powered speedometer and tachometer,
as well as battery and fuel gauges. A Pioneer sound system, power
windows and locks and vintage air-conditioning ensure cruising
comfort in this very unique 1957 Olds Street Custom. The interior
is as modern as can be, with a few vintage touches. The center
console features power window switches ensconced among
aircraft-style toggle switches, a pair of cupholder and three
ancillary gauges, all hidden beneath a sliding wood door. Eli?s
rocket logos are not the ones used in Oldsmobile advertising; they
represent the work the car?s designer died as a software
troubleshooter on test software for the 5 Rocketdyne F-1 engines
that powered the Saturn V moon rocket. Bill O?Connor of Horse Shoe,
North Carolina, designed and built Eli between 2014 and 2016.
O?Connor, with friends and other craftsmen, including
Hendersonville?s General Auto Report and Blue Ridge Auto Services,
worked under O?Connor?s close supervision. Documentation includes a
laminated, oversized background information card on the car. If you
