For Sale: 1949 International KB5 in Hamilton, Montana

Vehicle Description

The “49er” was originally a delivery truck for Lawrence “Lum” Wanderer’s fuel, oil and coal business in Hamilton, Montana. The truck was used for delivering coal in Hamilton and around the Bitterroot Valley.

Fred T. Parker purchased the truck in the late 1970’s from the Wanderer family after Lum’s passing. Parker dismantled it down to the frame for a full restoration with the intent of making it into a car hauler for his 1926 International and 1911 Sears. The truck’s 6-cylinder Green Diamond motor was deemed not to need an engine overhaul due to its low mileage and the truck always being stored in a garage.

The original box on the back was unsuitable for hauling cars, so the frame was extended 2’ and the driveshaft was lengthened to accommodate a longer, lower bed.

The restoration was completed in the early 1980’s with new upholstery, paint, new butcher block fabricated bed, tires, and whatever else was needed to make the truck road worthy.  The sides on the bed were added to protect the vehicles being hauled and are still available to be reinstalled if desired.

Once restored, the truck hauled Parker’s ‘26 International and ‘11 Sears to many out of town parades and Bitterroot Valley Duster car club events around the Bitterroot Valley. It was also once driven over Skalkaho Pass to Philipsburg, Montana (6,000+ft climb in elevation) to pick up another truck for parts to complete the restoration of his 1926 International.

The last time the truck is believed to have been run was in 1999 for the Stevensville, MT “Class of '49” 50th anniversary float in the Stevensville Creamery Picnic Parade.  Fred Parker passed away in 2001, and the truck has been carefully stored in a weather-proof shed.

In May 2019 the old fuel was drained, tires repaired, and battery replaced. The engine ran when gas was directly fed into the carburetor, however there seems to be an issue getting the fuel pumping, and the cause is yet to be determined (video included of first start). The brakes were in full working order when stored in 2001, but have not been inspected as of yet.

The 49er currently has 34,256 original miles and is currently owned by Fred T. Parker’s son, Donald T. Parker.
